„As part of their studies of the use of online communities, several authors also examine the practical implications of the metaphors and rhetorical strategies that are commonly used to talk about them.Online communities are an international phenomenon, and this book has a truly international perspective. There are chapters by authors in New Zealand, the United States, France, Great Britain, Canada, Mexico, and Italy, and the chapter of interviews with staff of Oxfam GB mentions uses of the Internet in Mali, South Africa, Burkina Faso, Brazil, Nicaragua, Bosnia, and Albania, among other places. Much of the literature on online communities has tended to look only at the United States-or at best, only in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, and Australia. This book's chapters about the work of Oxfam and about Red Escolar in Mexico give evidence that some of the most interesting developments, both potentially and actually, are outside these regions.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0130323829/ - Cached

„"It's critical that key industry retailers embrace the Fair Trade model and acknowledge the important role they can play to help solve the current crisis of low prices driving coffee farmers out of business. Dunkin' Donuts is setting an excellent industry example with this move." Oxfam America President Raymond C. Offenheiser added, "Oxfam is proud to salute Dunkin' Donuts in their decision to sell and promote fair trade certified coffee - a commitment that will benefit the many coffee growers facing hardship while also providing a superior cup of coffee to consumers." Oxfam is a humanitarian agency that works in most coffee producing countries. "The decision to buy Fair Trade Certified coffee is making an important and tangible difference in people's lives.“http://www.transfairusa.org/content/about/ pr_030425.php - Cached
Global Exchange : US Plans to Rejoin International Coffee Organization
(#)
„But plummeting coffee prices have created a global humanitarian crisis where farmers in poor countries sell their coffee beans for much less than they spend to harvest them, creating increased poverty, hunger, and dislocation in 50 coffee-growing countries. The US government's involvement with the ICO could help strengthen international efforts to alleviate that problem, said Seth Petchers, Coffee Program Coordinator for Oxfam America. As the largest coffee importing nation in the world, representing about a quarter of the world's consumption, the US can push for quality improvement programs, direct market access, and diversification initiatives, which could help increase the price that family farmers receive. "Coffee plays a crucial role in the economic health of communities in poor countries all over the world," Petchers said.“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ 2528.html - Cached

„The charity argues that the companies make huge profits while farmers receive only 5% of the retail price. "They know there is terrible human suffering at the heart of their business and yet they do virtually nothing to help," said Oxfam’s campaigns director Adrian Lovett. Oxfam wants governments and business leaders to change practices to reverse the current situation of supply far-exceeding demand. It suggests they trade only in quality coffee, pay farmers a decent price and back ICO attempts to rectify the problem 'Stunning policy failure' Oxfam estimates 8% more coffee is produced than necessary every year, causing a slump in export prices.“http://www.ineedcoffee.com/04/shadecoffee/ ?page=4 - Cached

Global Exchange : DEVELOPMENT: Agricultural Subsidies Lock-In Coffee Farmers - Report
(#)
„Some civil society groups have responded by pressuring roasters in rich nations. In September 2002, Oxfam launched its 'Coffee Rescue Plan', which called on the world's major coffee roasters -- including Kraft Foods, Nestle, Procter & Gamble and Sara Lee -- to increase the market for Fair Trade coffee, bring the current oversupply of coffee back into line with demand, and to help ensure that farmers are able to earn a decent living. The report predicts the situation will likely improve because of long-term historic cycles that will lead to supply eventually aligning more closely with market demand, so that prices will recover somewhat. But it warns that a price recovery would only be temporary.“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ 1687.html - Cached

„But proponents of fair trade -- a system that pays farmers at least $1.26 per pound, or $1.41 for organic coffee -- say that still falls short of the 80 cents a pound it costs small-scale farmers to produce gourmet beans. According to Oxfam, a "coffee crisis" affects 25 million coffee-growing families in more than 50 countries, from Mexico to Ethiopia. In Latin America, where non-fair-trade farmers end up with an average of 20 cents per pound after paying brokers known as "coyotes," Oxfam says the crisis compels growers to abandon their farms and contributes to poverty and malnutrition in coffee-growing communities.“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ 1736.html - Cached

„Rick Peyser, SCAA Board member and Chair, SCAA Sustainable Committee, has been working with his company, Green Mountain Roasters on several relationship projects. Stewardship coffees, Coffee Kids (he is currently the president), and Oxfam to name a few, are commitments that express Green Mountain’s commitment to educating the industry and consumers while searching for sustainable solutions. Peyser concurred that everyone in the industry agrees that the current crisis demands a broad-based solution. “Fair Trade, by itself, isn’t enough; improving quality, by itself, isn’t enough; eliminating trade barriers, by itself, isn’t enough,” he said.“http://www.teaandcoffee.net/1202/coffee2.htm - Cached

„It is like calling French wine Marseilles or Le Havre after the port that it is shipped from. Santos is a common term for bulk commodity grade natural that Brazil produces in huge volume for the multinational roasting giants - you know, the guys in the Oxfam report for whom coffee is one of thousands of brands in the portfolio. Santos is bulked together from farms all over Brazil, and cannot be traced back to individual growers any more than vin de table can be traced to any particular vineyard. „Coffee production is in deep crisis. Coffee farmers worldwide are suffering from low prices, the lowest in 30 years, reports Oxfam in their recent study, Bitter Coffee: How the Poor are Paying for the Slump in Coffee Prices. Producers in developing countries are suffering not just from low prices generated by oversupply, but from an increasingly unequal distribution of the wealth generated by the coffee trade. In fact, out of the $55 billion generated by the sale of coffee, those countries that produce the beans receive only $8 billion (International Coffee Organization).“http://www.aboutcoffee.net/ 2002_07_28_bcearc.html - Cached
