„The traditional system of coffee trade goes something like this: small farmer / middleman / processor / exporter / U.S. broker / trader / coffee company / distributor / store / consumer. Each of the many steps along the way costs money—with the largest amount taken by the middlemen—and is reflected in the price we pay at the retailer. Middlemen (known as "coyotes") purchase beans directly from the farmers and, depending on the current market price, are able to limit the amount they pay.“

Fair Trade, Organic & Shade Grown
„Equal Exchange's certified organic coffees, and many of our conventional coffees, are also shade grown, a traditional farming method which benefits the farmer and the local environment. A typical shade grown farm is made up of coffee trees grown alongside other food crops under a canopy of taller trees. These taller trees provide fruit, wood and other valuable products to the farmer while offering protection and nutrients to the coffee plants and preventing erosion of the soil.“

Kobricks, our supplier, buys its Kenyans through an exporter who participates in this bidding process- a process that ensures the highest quality coffee commands the highest market price, thus rewarding farmers for a job well done. Kenyan coffee is wet-processed and sold by the size of the bean, with AA signifying the largest (and most desirable), followed by A and B.“
