Organic News Winter/Spring 1999 ()

„According to Rice, who developed the marketing plan for Transfair U.S., "A significantly large portion of those surveyed were concerned about the plight of coffee producers, and if given the option, would buy small farmer coffee over other brands." Cost was rated last in importance behind taste, convenience, and means of production. It's important to note that fair trade coffee does not cost more than current, gourmet-quality coffee. The importers are able to pay more money to the farmers by reducing the number of steps between the farmer and the consumer, not by charging the consumer more. If things work out as planned, large scale coffee trade will be changing in the near future, and consumers will be given the opportunity to choose between fair trade-grown coffee and traditionally grown coffee.“

„"Fair Trade is needed because with little or no income, farmers can be forced to sell their next crop in advance to local middlemen, who often pay far below the harvest's value," added Rice. "Currently, world coffee prices are in a prolonged slump." Starbucks Fair Trade certified coffee will be sold in 16-ounce FlavorLock™ bags for $11.45 in retail stores in the United States and on Starbucks.com. The coffee, part of the Lively ImpressionsŠ family, is a balanced light-to-medium blend of Latin American coffees with complementary acidity and body. It is the second offering of Starbucks "Commitment to Origins" coffees, which includes shade grown, organic and/or Fair Trade selections.“

„The Fair Trade minimum price for organic coffee is $1.41 per pound, resulting in more income and improved health care, education and housing for coffee farming families. Additionally, the Fair Trade label means that farmers are given direct access to U.S. markets, which eliminates many intermediaries; that farmers are provided credit and signed contracts so they can plan for the long-term; and that the coffee was grown using eco-friendly techniques.Despite a strong commitment to the Fair Trade philosophy, the double-certified Green Mountain Coffees that will be offered at Wild Oats will be priced consistently with current coffee offerings in the stores. In addition, a number of Green Mountain's Fair Trade coffees have been highly rated by independent third-party specialty coffee tasters. Therefore, consumers will be receiving the value-added benefits associated with organic and Fair Trade coffee, including exceptional quality, at the same price they are paying for a pound or cup of coffee in Wild Oats stores today.“
