„One can buy fair trade clothing, crafts, musical instruments—you name it. Generally, and depending on the item being produced, this is accomplished by guaranteeing small producers a purchase price that earns a profit, and/or ensuring healthy working conditions for employees of large producers. In the case of the coffee trade, the main concern is guaranteeing a profit, although there are other criteria, as established by European fair trade laws.“

Coffee is not the only fair-trade product attracting faith groups' attention. SERRV International, begun in 1949, partners with 27 denominations to sell fair-trade crafts from around the world. But perhaps the grandmother of church-sponsored fair-trade projects is Ten Thousand Villages, started 58 years ago by the Mennonite Central Committee, the relief and development agency of the Mennonite and Brethren in Christ denominations. Today, the nonprofit chain of 150 stores throughout North America sells handicrafts purchased under fair-trade agreements with Third World artisans.“

„Why organic coffee? For starters, organically-grown coffee beans are healthier for you, since no chemicals or artificial treatments are used in any step of the growing and harvesting process. Additionally, organic coffee tends to taste fresher and better than its chemically-treated counterpart. Organic farming as a whole is friendlier to the environment, in that the absence of chemicals tends to enhance the soil's productivity and regenerative properties.“
