Melitta in the News (#)
„In the world’s biggest coffee producing regions, there remain a select number of farmers that continue to grow coffee the same way they have for generations. Each coffee tree is planted and nurtured using only environmentally-friendly techniques, harvesting each crop by hand. The coffee from these farms is 100% organic and approved as such by the USDA. These techniques are used to make the three types of Melitta World Harvest Organic Coffees, including Morning Bliss (light roast), Enchanted Evening (dark roast), and Sun & Moon (blend of light and dark roasts).“

„APECAFE has been working to improve the quality of their coffee by contracting extension workers to provide trainings and technical assistance to the farmers. In 2003, its coffee was rated one of the best coffees in El Salvador by the Specialty Coffee Association’s Cup of Excellence competition. Extension workers are also providing assistance to the farmers in organic production, enabling them to protect the environment and earn higher prices for their coffee. They plan to begin selling certified organic coffee to the international market within two years.“

„In the ensuing years, Melitta added fine ground coffee products, both manual and electric coffee making systems and accessories to its line of products. Melitta’s manual coffeemakers have always been part of the company tradition and were perfected by Ms Bentz herself. The original cone makers have been updated to be thermal carafes, making brewing convenient and fast in response to today’s fast-pace society. The U.S. headquarters for Melitta is located in Clearwater, Florida and is part of the privately held Melitta Group in Minden, Germany.“

„But for the majority of small coffee farmers, who live in rural communities in some of the poorest countries in the world, the benefits are small. The chain of events that leads from the farm to your cup is long and expensive: Processors, creditors, exporters, brokers, and a cast of middlemen known to Latin American farmers as coyotes can all come between you and the farmers before you get to sip your morning brew. With world coffee prices constantly changing and coyotes paying the lowest price possible, coffee farmers never know how much theyll get for their crops. Isolated from markets, they struggle to make a simple living.“
