McDonald’s brews up £1m fair trade deal - and wields it as a marketing weapon

http://theshot.coffeeratings.com [Espresso News and Reviews - TheShot.coffeeratings.com] For example, Kraft, one of coffee’s Big Four, began buying Rainforest Alliance Certified beans in 2003 for worldwide use in their consumer coffees, including Yubana mass-produced coffee that CoffeeReview.com’s Kenneth Davids recently described as, “steamed to remove the sewery taints these coffees acquire through being dried inside the fruit in rotting heaps.”

http://theshot.coffeeratings.com  Espresso News and Reviews - TheShot.coffeeratings.com: Perhaps one of the greatest statements on Fair Trade’s shortcomings came this year from Chicago’s Intelligentsia, one of America’s premiere specialty coffee roasters and home to the 2006 U.S. Barista Champion. Intelligentsia found enough problems and inconsistencies with Fair Trade that they opted to define and pursue their own alternative certification system, called Intelligensia Direct Trade™, and no longer do business with Fair Trade. Blogging Stocks: But, with the sheer quantity needed to supply all these Wal-Mart stores, organic produce and food suppliers are going to have to transform the entire industry to take on this new super-challenge. You have more fields, you invest in three to four times as much property -- which in organic produce-producing California is not cheap -- and these organic foods suppliers suddenly are "betting the farm" on the long-term sustainability of Wal-Mart carrying and growing the organic segment for a long time. Ms. Adventures in Italy: cheese concoction, I decided to not stop just at one cheese, but use three! I actually am lucky enough to have in my possession a big block of medium sharp Wisconsin cheddar from the States that I smuggled over in August, and finally decided it was time to break the seal and open it. (I kept calling you Siz in the dream) But I guess from reading your blog my subconscious thinks we'd be good friends. (via Cosmos)

Blogging Stocks: It is unclear how deeply the New York pressure against trans fatty acids and hydrogenated oils is going to affect our dietary and investment landscape. Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) sure jumped up in a hurry to change its ways and KFC a division of Yum Brands (NYSE:YUM), dropped its trans fat ingredients shortly after it was legally taken to task about them. http://www.coffeehabitat.com  Coffee and Conservation: Davids discusses what inexpensive coffees mean to farmers, even the theoretically beneficial types like the Rainforest Alliance certified Yuban blend (which I discussed in depth here). He notes, "mainstream supermarket coffees generally fail to provide much option for those of us who want to recognize and reward coffee growers as our colleagues rather than exploit them as unacknowledged drones in the vast global commodity hive." thefixchicks.com: Remembering my admiration of the Senseo, I finally did a little digging and was 1) pleasantly surprised to learn that the Senseo coffeemakers are not brand-proprietary when it comes to coffee, and 2) overjoyed to find a huge selection of compatible coffee pods. In fact, I quickly learned that there is a whole online world devoted to single-serve coffee (SSC) in general. (via Cosmos)

[Blog.fairtradenyc.org] Please visit www.fairtradenyc.org to view the New York City Fair ...: The market for Fair Trade Certifiedâ™ coffee has grown by an average of over 70% each year since 1999. [Paosborne.com] a view through my own eyes :: FairTaste: Anyway the point I am trying to make, is that I feel for the Sri Lankan tea growers, the Columbian Coffee harvesters etc as they do need to make a living and through the FairTrade system they can and do, do so. But whilst the coffee (and tea for that matter) to be blunt continues to tastes appauling I am not going to drink it.

Half not good with fractions.: I'd have to agree with the poster about 10 posts up...I like Starbucks coffee (actually, their beans, because the coffee is just too damned confusing to order), but the one thing that I absolutely CANNOT order there is a frappuchino. I don't know what kind of chemicals they put in there, but I know if I ever need a case of explosive diarrhea, just add Frappuchino.
