Level Ground Trading --making the dream come true - coffeecrew.com - victoria, b.c. canada (#)
„In November 2002 the Bolivian coffee and the first trial Frutos (dried tropical fruit) from the Fruandes in Bogota arrived! Soon after, Panela (Colombian cane sugar) arrived and Level Ground was working hard to partner with stores to sell these products. By 2003, Level Ground was bursting at the seams (some office staff had moved to a VW van in the parking lot) and therefore purchased and renovated a larger facility. This move included the installation of two roasters and provided room for storage of our Colombian coffee, decaf, Bolivian organic, Panela (cane sugar) and Frutos (dried tropical fruit).“

„The Colombian Coffee Federation has done a commendable job in promoting the specialty coffees of Colombia. Although most of the Colombian coffee you find in the stores is overrated, excellent examples are available. Freshly roasted Colombian coffee is rich in flavor, heavy bodied, has a bright acidity, and is intensely aromatic. Colombia produces about 12% of the coffee in the world, second only to Brazil (Note: This year coffee production in Vietnam is expected to surpass that of Colombia. Unfortunately, Vietnam produces almost 100% Robusta).“

„Within Colombia, the Federation provides a network of agricultural expertise and quality control to insure the highest standards for Colombian Coffee. Around the world, Federation offices work with appropriate trade and media channels within each country to promote the consumption of Colombian Coffee. To promote Colombian Coffee consumption it was first necessary to let consumers know why Colombian Coffee is a better product, hence to teach them the amount of care and labor that goes into growing and harvesting Colombian Coffee as well as the ideal climatic conditions that are hard to find in other countries. The initial educational campaign consisted on television commercials that would show Juan Valdez, Colombian Coffee's longtime spokesperson, in the coffee fields hand-picking the beans at the moment of prime ripeness.“

„Cafe´ de Colombia - QUALITY Another aspect of Colombian Coffee that makes it so unique is the country's high quality control standards. It starts in the farm where the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia sends an appointed official to inspect each farm for sanitary conditions, healthy trees and the quality of each harvest. The inspector checks to see if the beans have been washed properly. He looks for adequate bean size, color texture and overall quality.“

„But while we are paying as much as $12 or more for a bag of conventionally traded Colombian coffee in gourmet coffee shops here in the United States, coffee exporters in Colombia are getting as little as 49 cents per pound—and the farmers who grew the coffee are only getting a fraction of that amount. That means that when we pay $1.50 for a cup of conventionally traded Colombian coffee the farmer who grew it gets less than 1˘!“
