Kopi Luwak (#)
„Definition: Kopi Luwak is so unusual that many people think it's a myth. On the island of Sumatra, a small animal eats the coffee fruits and the seeds (beans) pass through its digestive system and excreted. The beans are collected from the jungle floor and processed as normal coffee.“

„Growers take the best beans from each crop, feed them to a weasel and then collect them again at the other end. The weasel's digestive system seems to do something magical to the beans which, she claims, makes them smoother and tastier than other kinds of coffee. (We'll hold off judgement.)“

„A mammal called a luwak, or civet, eats ripe coffee cherries, digests the fruit, and excretes the seeds, after which the seeds or beans are gathered from its dry droppings. Kopi luwak is one of the most expensive coffees in the world owing to obvious limitations on its production. Authorities differ on how much of the kopi luwak that arrives at coffee dealers is authentic and how much is ordinary coffee that has been "treated" in luwak manure, but samples certainly look authentic, smell authentic, and are pleasantly earthy, sweet and full in the cup.“

„ I don't know if they export their "Chon" variety, but it is exquisite! It's sort of a poor man's kopi luwak, since it has gone through the digestive system of a weasel, not a civet.“

„He lightly roasts about 21 grams, enough beans for three cups, in a Jabez Burns two barrel sample roaster, a rare and beautiful machine dating from the '30s. Vournas gives the beans a light roast -- just after the second popping -- to accentuate the specific flavors of this rare coffee; a darker roast would obliterate the subtler flavors and replace them with a more generic taste. Vournas points out that this coffee, like most Indonesian-grown, has lots of moisture and roasts nicely.“

„The Infamous Kopi Luak. Luak coffee is one of those snicker-rich stories beloved of newspaper writers and party raconteurs. This gourmet curiosity consists (ostensibly) of coffee beans that have been excreted by a smallish animal called a luak or palm civet after the luak has consumed (and digested) the coffee fruit that previously enveloped those beans.“
