„The Kona Coffee Council, the local trade group representing farmers, said it “does not condone the civil action filed against the customers of Kona coffee because of this alleged fraud.” And, “The people responsible for the civil actions make up less than one percent of the people engaged in the coffee business in Kona and do not speak for the majority of the industry.” A press release put out by the council also said the civil actions are affecting the Big Island economy negatively and do nothing to promote Kona coffee or other coffee grown in the State of Hawaii. Celia Smith of Smith Farms in South Kona, a past president of The Kona Coffee Council, noted on another occasion that there were but 19 plaintiffs out of 600 Kona farmers. Some have said that the suit was driven more by Mark Davis, the plaintiff’s council, than by the convictions of the grower community. John Langenstein said that farmers were being pressured by processors whose economic interests were threatened by the suit to withhold support for the legal action taken by his group.“

True Kona is “medium-bodied, fairly acidy, with some subtle winey tones, very richly flavored and overwhelmingly aromatic when fresh,” says Davids. Like Jamaican Blue Mountain (see above), some inferior coffees sometimes purport to be Kona, and it is worthwhile to find out whether you are drinking the real product. Be especially wary of coffees that are "Kona blends" or "Kona-style," both allowing for the possibility that little or none of the coffee is true Kona.“

„Chela Lopez Kuhn, the director of sales and marketing for Coffees of Hawaii, Inc., pointed out that there is a movement afoot on the part of some farmers to change the law stipulating that any coffee labeled as a blend of Kona, or Maui, Molokai of Kauai coffee contain at least 10% of that coffee. Proponents of the change want the law to stipulate that the minimum be 30%, thus requiring not only greater use of the coffee but also making that blend component more noticeable in the taste of the coffee. “We had some visitors from Japan recently,” Lopez-Kuhn noted, “and they had several observations, one of which was that their fellow countrymen visit Hawaii, pick up either flavored or a K blend, take it home and say Hawaiian coffee is not good, not realizing it has little or no Hawaiian coffee in it.“

„It seems that SmithFarms' neigbour, a company by the name of Kona Purple Mountain, has some sort of running feud with Cea Smith from SmithFarms. A person (or persons) from Kona Purple discovered the Kona auction *I* put online within hours of me doing so, and first left Cea a scathing letter that criticized her and said something to the effect of "I can't believe anyone would think you were that nice a person", etc etc. Then the next morning I started getting emails from people, saying eBay canceled my auctions. The were cancelled because of a minor technicality that someone wrote a complaint to eBay about - the links to SmithFarm's site.“

„Fooling the Customer A bad roaster will try to make money by exploiting the ignorance of their customers. If some roaster is trying to sell Hawaiian Kona Blend for $17 a pound, they are trying to capitalize on the fact you won't recognize the last word says "Blend". Blend means that there is probably very little Kona in the mix. If a roaster uses the term "Style", as in "Hawaiian Kona Style" then they are really out to pull the wool over your eyes.“

While I prefer Kona when it comes to the "premium" beans on the market, I have to say Kona doesn't hold a candle to JBM for espresso. The Old Tavern, straight up for espresso, the day after roasting, is probably in my top 3 or 4 beans for espresso. It had a nice zing, a fairly smooth finish, and lingered for quite a while on the tastebuds, in a generally good way.“

From there, beans from one farm vary a bit from beans from another farm, but they're all pretty good. Some folks like graded beans but I prefer estate run beans from northern Kona farms.“
