JAMA -- BRITISH AND AMERICAN ENGLISH., October 22, 2003, 290 (16): 2200 ()

„It is interesting, therefore, in this connection to note a comment by the editor of one of our British contemporaries1 which in a way criticises the spirit of conservatism in regard to all suggestions toward a simplification of the orthography of the language. It has its little fling, saying that "our American cousins, having no history and possessing no proprietary right to the language, being, in fact, only lodgers, so to speak, display no sort of reluctance to tamper with the ridiculous redundancies which our forefathers have bequeathed to us, and which our schoolmasters persist in maintaining to the discomfiture of the scholars and the curtailment of .[Full Text of this Article]“

JAMA -- Abstract: Caffeine dependence syndrome. Evidence from case histories and experimental evaluations, October 5, 1994, Strain et al. 272 (13): 1043 JAMA -- Abstract: Caffeine dependence syndrome. Evidence from case histories and experimental evaluations, October 5, 1994, Strain et al. 272 (13): 1043

„Criteria used for making diagnoses (and rates of their prevalence) were as follows: withdrawal (94%), use continued despite knowledge of a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by caffeine use (94%), persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control use (81%), and tolerance (75%). Eleven subjects underwent the double-blind caffeine-withdrawal evaluation portion of the study, and nine (82%) of the 11 showed objective evidence of caffeine withdrawal, including eight of 11 with functional impairment. CONCLUSIONS--These results, together with other experimental evidence, suggest that caffeine exhibits the features of a typical psychoactive substance of dependence. It is valuable to recognize caffeine dependence as a clinical syndrome, since some people feel compelled to continue caffeine use despite desires and recommendations to the contrary.“

JAMA -- Abstract: Fruit and Vegetable Intake in Relation to Risk of Ischemic Stroke, October 6, 1999, Joshipura et al. 282 (13): 1233 JAMA -- Abstract: Fruit and Vegetable Intake in Relation to Risk of Ischemic Stroke, October 6, 1999, Joshipura et al. 282 (13): 1233

„Results  A total of 366 women and 204 men had an ischemic stroke. After controlling for standard cardiovascular risk factors, persons in the highest quintile of fruit and vegetable intake (median of 5.1 servings per day among men and 5.8 servings per day among women) had a relative risk (RR) of 0.69 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.52-0.92) compared with those in the lowest quintile. An increment of 1 serving per day of fruits or vegetables was associated with a 6% lower risk of ischemic stroke (RR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.90-0.99; P=.01, test for trend). Cruciferous vegetables (RR, 0.68 for an increment of 1 serving per day; 95% CI, 0.49-0.94), green leafy vegetables (RR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.62-0.99), citrus fruit including juice (RR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.68-0.96), and citrus fruit juice (RR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.61-0.93) contributed most to the apparent protective effect of total fruits and vegetables.“

JAMA -- Outbreaks of Salmonella Serotype Enteritidis Infection Associated With Eating Raw or Undercooked Shell Eggs--United States, 1996-1998, March 1, 2000, 283 (9): 1132 JAMA -- Outbreaks of Salmonella Serotype Enteritidis Infection Associated With Eating Raw or Undercooked Shell Eggs--United States, 1996-1998, March 1, 2000, 283 (9): 1132

„Cultures of two leftover lasagnas and one lasagna made on the same day but not eaten yielded SE phage type 8. The lasagnas were prepared commercially by a company in Gaithersburg, Maryland, using fully cooked meat or spinach sauce and a mixture of raw shell eggs, ricotta and mozzarella cheeses, and spices. Although the lasagnas were not labeled with a manufacture date, investigators determined that most, if not all, of the lasagnas implicated were made on the same day from a single batch of the egg-cheese mixture. The product was then frozen (except for one event in which the lasagnas were kept refrigerated as a special order) and held without further cooking until purchased.“
