JAMA -- Abstract: Poor survival of treatment-related acute nonlymphocytic leukemia, August 22, 1990, Neugut et al. 264 (8): 1006 ()

„The 6271 patients with de novo ANLL had an estimated 12-month survival of 30%, while the 107 patients with treatment-related ANLL (radiation therapy, 60; chemotherapy, 29; both, 18) had an estimated 12-month survival of 10%. This is not due to lingering effects of the first tumor since ANLL following solid tumors not treated with chemotherapy or radiation therapy (118 cases) has similar survival (estimated 12-month survival, 36%) as de novo ANLL. We conclude that ANLL that occurs after chemotherapy or radiation therapy is biologically more aggressive and/or resistant to therapy than spontaneous ANLL. This provides a rationale for current studies on treatment-induced cellular changes and on more aggressive therapy for these patients.“

Geothermal Energy: Applications Geothermal Energy: Applications

„The Salton Sea and Imperial Valley in Southern California has long been recognised as a 'hot spot' for geothermal development. At present, there are approximately 15 fish farming (or aquaculture) operations clustered, for the most part, around the Salton Sea. All of these farms use geothermal fluids to control the water temperatures in the fish culture facilities, to produce larger fish in a shorter period of time and to permit winter production which would otherwise not be possible. In aggregate, these farms produce on the order of 4.5 million kg (10,000,000 lbs.) of fish per year, most of which is sold into the California market.“

JAMA -- Abstract: Caffeine dependence syndrome. Evidence from case histories and experimental evaluations, October 5, 1994, Strain et al. 272 (13): 1043 JAMA -- Abstract: Caffeine dependence syndrome. Evidence from case histories and experimental evaluations, October 5, 1994, Strain et al. 272 (13): 1043

„Criteria used for making diagnoses (and rates of their prevalence) were as follows: withdrawal (94%), use continued despite knowledge of a persistent or recurrent physical or psychological problem that is likely to have been caused or exacerbated by caffeine use (94%), persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control use (81%), and tolerance (75%). Eleven subjects underwent the double-blind caffeine-withdrawal evaluation portion of the study, and nine (82%) of the 11 showed objective evidence of caffeine withdrawal, including eight of 11 with functional impairment. CONCLUSIONS--These results, together with other experimental evidence, suggest that caffeine exhibits the features of a typical psychoactive substance of dependence. It is valuable to recognize caffeine dependence as a clinical syndrome, since some people feel compelled to continue caffeine use despite desires and recommendations to the contrary.“
