JAMA -- Abstract: A Prospective Study of Coffee Consumption and the Risk of Symptomatic Gallstone Disease in Men, June 9, 1999, Leitzmann et al. 281 (22): 2106 ()

„After adjusting for other known or suspected risk factors, compared with men who did not consume regular coffee in 1986 and 1990, the adjusted relative risk (RR) for those who consistently drank 2 to 3 cups of regular coffee per day was 0.60 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.42-0.86) and for those who drank 4 or more cups per day the RR was 0.55 (95% CI, 0.33-0.92). All coffee brewing methods showed a decreased risk. The risk of symptomatic gallstone disease also declined with increasing caffeine intake (P for trend=.005). After controlling for known or suspected risk factors, the RR for men in the highest category of caffeine intake (>800 mg/d) compared with men in the lowest category (“

JAMA -- Abstract: Serial coronary angiographic evidence that antioxidant vitamin intake reduces progression of coronary artery atherosclerosis, June 21, 1995, Hodis et al. 273 (23): 1849 JAMA -- Abstract: Serial coronary angiographic evidence that antioxidant vitamin intake reduces progression of coronary artery atherosclerosis, June 21, 1995, Hodis et al. 273 (23): 1849

„OBJECTIVE--To explore the association of supplementary and dietary vitamin E and C intake with the progression of coronary artery disease. DESIGN--A subgroup analysis of the on-trial antioxidant vitamin intake database acquired in the Cholesterol Lowering Atherosclerosis Study, a randomized, placebo-controlled, serial angiographic clinical trial evaluating the risk and benefit of colestipol-niacin on coronary artery disease progression. SETTING--Community- and university-based cardiac catheterization laboratories. SUBJECTS--A total of 156 men aged 40 to 59 years with previous coronary artery bypass graft surgery.“

JAMA -- Abstract: Dietary Intake of Antioxidant Nutrients and the Risk of Incident Alzheimer Disease in a Biracial Community Study, June 26, 2002, Morris et al. 287 (24): 3230 JAMA -- Abstract: Dietary Intake of Antioxidant Nutrients and the Risk of Incident Alzheimer Disease in a Biracial Community Study, June 26, 2002, Morris et al. 287 (24): 3230

„Conclusion  This study suggests that vitamin E from food, but not other antioxidants, may be associated with a reduced risk of AD. Unexpectedly, this association was observed only among individuals without the APOE 4 allele.“

JAMA -- Abstract: Comfort care for terminally ill patients. The appropriate use of nutrition and hydration, October 26, 1994, McCann et al. 272 (16): 1263 JAMA -- Abstract: Comfort care for terminally ill patients. The appropriate use of nutrition and hydration, October 26, 1994, McCann et al. 272 (16): 1263

„PARTICIPANTS--Mentally aware, competent patients with terminal illnesses monitored from time of admission to time of death while residing in the comfort care unit. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES--Symptoms of hunger, thirst, and dry mouth were recorded, and the amounts and types of food and fluids necessary to relieve these symptoms were documented. The subjective level of comfort was assessed longitudinally in all patients. RESULTS--Of the 32 patients monitored during the 12 months of study, 20 patients (63%) never experienced any hunger, while 11 patients (34%) had symptoms only initially.“
