International Coffee Organization

„17. One of the key objectives of the International Coffee Agreement, that of encouraging Members to develop a sustainable coffee economy, very much tallies with the goals of the World Summit on Sustainable Development of poverty eradication within a framework of sustainable development. In fact the objectives of the new 2001 Agreement are very much development-oriented and fuller recognition of this by other multilateral organizations would be very helpful. The special importance of the coffee sector to the economic development of producing countries should be more widely understood, with the corollary that the ICO should be regularly consulted with respect to projects and programmes addressing or affecting the coffee sector in such countries or globally. In coffee, which remains of key importance to a substantial number of developing countries including LDCs, the ICO should be recognized as constituting a fundamental instrument for cooperation and coordination in working towards sustainable development.“http://www.ico.org/crisis/main.htm - Cached
„All food items being brought into the US will have to be traceable to the farm to comply with bio-terrorism acts. For coffee, traceability just has to go back to the mill. The law will go into effect December 12, 2003. Most coffee producers around the world are not taking any steps to comply with these rules. All food manufacturers have to be registered. Farms and millers are exempt. Roasters and packagers must register. It can only be done on internet and after final rules are written and accepted (on or around October 15, 2003). SCAA is pushing for Letters of Agreements with producing countries to participate in Cup of Excellence program. SCAA and NCA are lobbying US to join the ICO. If the US doesn’t join, the ICO will probably collapse. Frank feels HCA’s participation in the International Relations Committee is worthwhile. He can attend the next meeting in January and at the SCAA Convention if the HCA so desires. The convention center in Atlanta for the SCAA is 3 miles away from the main hotels.“http://www.hawaiicoffeeassoc.org/ 10_8_2003_minutes.htm - Cached

„I was personally relieved to discover that the sequence of my preferences matched the preferences of the international jury that selected the Cup of Excellence winners. True, my ratings numerically were about three or four points higher than the international jury ratings, but this can be explained in a number of ways, ranging from Ken Is Too Easy to the fact that I am cupping these coffees in slightly darker, more fully developed production roasts than the lighter "cupping" roast used for international cupping competitions. In the case of the Vargem Grande, a competition coffee offered by two different roasters, the difference in my ratings between the two versions directly relates to roast style. This delicate coffee seemed to fare much better in the medium roast offered by Mr.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=57 - Cached

„London - At its recent meeting at the headquarters of the International Coffee Organization (ICO) in London, the International Coffee Council spoke on its latest report on the market situation for coffee. The report confirms that the current situation of very low prices is leading to severe economic and social problems in a growing number of coffee producing countries, and concerns over coffee quality in consuming countries. The Council recognized that one possible way to address this problem was through a quality improvement program and the establishment of a Quality Committee to devise rules to facilitate measures for the withdrawal from the market of defective coffee beans and those with a moisture content above a permitted level.“http://www.teaandcoffee.net/1201/world.htm - Cached
„Most sell 100 percent Fair Trade coffee; all sell at least 90 percent Fair Trade coffee and have committed themselves to move toward 100 percent. When you purchase coffee from one of these organizations, you are not only ensuring that the farmers who grew it are receiving a fair price-you are supporting an alternative business model, and voting with your dollars for a value-based system of international trade. CRS endorses the Fair Traders proudly, and encourages Catholics and other conscientious consumers in the United States to purchase coffee from these mission-driven organizations. „Throughout the competition coffees are identified only by three-digit numbers that change with every round of cupping. Those lots of coffee that make it through the first in-country-juried stage of competition and its two rounds of cupping then advance to the final rounds of evaluation by an international jury. Typically these juries include coffee buyers and cuppers from Europe, North America and Japan, plus cuppers from coffee producing countries. Working with the 100-point rating system pioneered by Coffee Review (but using an evaluation form different from the one used at Coffee Review) this group of judges cup and rate the coffees that made it past the in-country jury.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=97 - Cached
Global Exchange : US Plans to Rejoin International Coffee Organization

„In a move praised around the world by coffee farmer advocates and coffee consuming countries alike, the United States government announced its intention to rejoin the International Coffee Organization, the international forum for coffee trade policy and production. About 25 million farmers depend on coffee crops to feed their families. But plummeting coffee prices have created a global humanitarian crisis where farmers in poor countries sell their coffee beans for much less than they spend to harvest them, creating increased poverty, hunger, and dislocation in 50 coffee-growing countries.“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ 2528.html - Cached

In the words of Bruce Mullins, Vice President of Coffee Bean International, “…specialty coffee consumers tend to have unspoken higher expectations for products and services than other people.” In the Specialty coffee marketplace the largest age group with many of those higher expectations is the 18-24 age group. This group of coffee consumers rose 25% in 2000 from 23% in 1999. „International Monetary Fund and World Bank policies that fix market prices for basic products and prevent governments from regulating those prices or protecting their farmers have resulted in calamity for coffee growers. Ever since the International Coffee Agreement's economic clauses were broken at the end of the '80s, the region's coffee producers have been left without any serious means of coordination or organising policy. Before this rupture, policy was clear-cut: neither banks, nor multilateral institutions, nor governments were authorised to promote expansion in coffee producing areas. ìAll this disappeared.“http://www.coffeecrew.com/articles/.../ the-crisis-brewing-in-the-coffee-world..html - Cached

„Readers should keep in mind that the juries of international coffee cuppers who assign ratings to these coffees sample them as green coffees brought to identical light-to-medium roasts, whereas at Coffee Review we take into account the intertwined impact of both coffee and roast when assigning our ratings. This difference in approach mainly explains why my ratings are often significantly higher than the jury ratings for the same green coffees. I am cupping these coffees at what coffee professionals call "production" roasts.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=96 - Cached

CoffeeGeek - So You Say There's a Coffee Crisis

„The International Coffee Organization is a middle of a road organization that has a good, common sense fix for the current crisis: if the lowest 5% of the current coffee market was declared off limits (as in no one buys that mediocre quality coffee; instead it is destroyed) and the lowest 5% producers are supported by the industry (read: the Big Four and other companies) to change over to other sustainable crops, roughly 350,000 tons of coffee would disappear from the global marketplace. This would boost Grade C prices, and start putting an end to the crisis.“http://www.coffeegeek.com/opinions/markprince/ 11-27-2002 - Cached
