„In Vietnam, there are reports of farmers selling their possessions to satisfy debt collectors. In Guatemala, for the 2001/02 crop, the harvest labour force has been reduced from 500,000 to 250,000. In Colombia, coca plantations can now be found in coffee areas. Coffee farmers from Mexico have died trying to enter the USA illegally after abandoning their farms, and indebted coffee growers have been committing suicide in India. In general the situation stimulates emigration to cities and to industrialised countries.“

„The Coffee Crisis: Farmers aren't paid a living wage for their products. Vietnam is flooding the world coffee market, driving the prices to historic lows. Corporations get fat profits (see Big Four above) while proclaiming their goody two shoes work of donating paltry amounts to "the cause" (one example is Nestle making a huge deal about spending $6mil on social issues in coffee producing regions - they make that six mil in profits every half day). Farmers are dying.“

„The principle challenges facing Manos Campesinas today are increasing the demand for their coffee (they only export approximately half of their total production), encouraging the farmers to convert to organic production (their goal is to be 100% certified organic), assisting them to diversify their crops so that they won’t be so hard hit by declining coffee prices, and promoting the active participation of women in the daily life of the cooperatives.“

„The company buys organic coffee for about $1.40 a pound directly from farmers' coops in Mexico, Guatemala, and Ethiopia. Then Peace Coffee turns around and sells it to American consumers at high-end markets and natural food stores in resealable bags that feature the company's logo -- a mandala-like turtle shell based on the mythological symbol for the union between the earth and spirit worlds. The prices the company pays farmers are set according to international Fair Trade standards, which guarantee the farmers a minimum rate of at least $1.26 per pound (www.fairtradeffederation). That's nearly three times as much money as they would ordinarily get from exploitative middlemen known as coyotes, whom many were previously forced to rely upon to get their crops to the big companies that ultimately market coffee to American consumers.“
