International Coffee Organization ()

„Coffee prices are at their lowest levels in 30 years, with the ICO composite indicator price standing at 47.30 US cents/lb in May 2002, compared to 180.44 five years ago. Despite the growing popularity of coffee as a drink, producers have seen their share of retail sales halve since the early 1990s from around US$12 billion to US$5.5 billion today.   This is leading to devastating social and political consequences for countries throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America, where coffee farms are being neglected or abandoned, and poverty is on the increase.  In Mexico and Central America, for example, an estimated 500,000 farm workers have lost their jobs as a result of the falling prices, and many farmers have turned either to illicit crops or abandoned their farms, creating migratory pressures.“

It's All About Coffee It's All About Coffee

Coffee prices are currently at their lowest levels in 30 years (the ICO composite indicator stood at 49.65 US cents/lb on 14 April 2003), and in 100 years in real terms. In almost all coffee producing countries, such prices are unable to cover production costs and have led to serious social and economic problems, including increased poverty, indebtedness, and abandonment of coffee farms.“

„The ICO composite indicator price, a historical series which can be extended back to 1947, provides an overall benchmark for the price of green coffee of all major origins and type, considered to be the best available measure of levels of green coffee transactions on a global basis.“

„They came down from $12 billion in 1998/99 to only $8.6 billion in 1999/2000. Since December 1999 the International Coffee Organization (ICO) price for Arabica fell from 124.46¢/lb to 66.16¢/lb on a monthly average, and for Robustas from 66.79¢/lb to 30.38¢/lb. More and more growers in the producing countries have to give up their farms or to produce without paying due regard to agreed quality standards. In the long run this might endanger the supply of high quality coffees which are essential for the consuming countries.“

„Prior to the collapse in international prices in the early 1990s, Ghana's export unit values were relatively stable at around 75% to 80% of the ICO Robusta Indicator price. With grower prices fixed by the government, levels were maintained by a cross-subsidy from the cocoa sector even during the international price slump after 1989. The low international prices in the early 1990s, combined with the difficulties encountered during the transition to a liberalised market, led to a decline in grower prices immediately after liberalisation. However, from 1993/94 onwards, the grower price has typically been over 65% of the f.o.b.“
