„The latter activity is part of the International Coffee Organization’s Positively Coffee programme, aimed at alleviating fears about effects on health by part of the population. The ICO is currently developing an action plan to be presented in September 2003 designed to achieve a substantial increase in world coffee consumption. Federacafe will also relaunch courses in coffee preparation to train over 100,000 people around the country in coffee preparation and in offering a range of drinks, from iced and flavoured coffees. With these and other efforts, in the next five years, Colombia hopes to be able to increase consumption from 1.4 to 2.8 million bags a year.“

„With this initiative, we are giving our customers the opportunity to positively impact the Fair Trade issue by purchasing this high quality coffee." "Fair Trade Certified coffee gives us all an easy way to help family farmers and the environment with something as simple as a daily cup of coffee," says Paul Rice, TransFair's Executive Director. "By choosing Fair Trade Certified coffee, certified coffee companies and consumers are establishing a meaningful partnership with coffee farmers and their families-a partnership that empowers the growers both socially and economically, so they can substantially improve the quality of their own lives." We are very enthusiastic that Peet's is launching a Fair Trade Blend. Their excellent reputation in the gourmet industry and their loyal customer base will greatly contribute to raising public awareness about the importance of supporting Fair Trade." Why is Fair Trade needed? Fair Trade supports coffee farmers by guaranteeing a decent, living wage for their harvest and encouraging organic cultivation methods that are safer for communities.“

„In order to improve balance on the demand side, the ICO is therefore seeking to increase coffee consumption among the 80% of the world population who do not currently drink coffee, using appropriate strategies for traditional markets, new and emerging markets, and coffee producing countries themselves. The improvement of coffee quality through the implementation of an ICO Coffee Quality-Improvement Programme (Resolution 407) is also a major initiative designed to increase coffee consumption, together with targeted promotional and educational programmes.“
