„The best known varieties are 'Typica' and 'Bourbon' but from these many different strains and cultivars have been developed, such as caturra (Brazil, Colombia), Mundo Novo (Brazil), Tico (Central America), the dwarf San Ramon and the Jamaican Blue Mountain. The average arabica plant is a large bush with dark-green oval leaves. It is genetically different from other coffee species, having four sets of chromosomes rather than two.“

„The company is equally careful, of course, with its product. Throughout processing, batches of beans are kept separate according to species (for the most part Novo Mundo, Catuai and Bourbon), harvest time, and type of processing. This way problems and successful techniques can later be identified. Fernando Augusto Vicentini, director of production at Daterra, says the company is obsessed with the quality and consistency.“

„But to make an impact in a world dominated by top produce from such coffee giants as Brazil and Colombia is a formidable challenge. "We have to upgrade the quality of our coffee, everything from the picking of the beans to the last phase of production, so as to meet the standards required abroad," says the head of the national exporters association, Boonlap Nhouyvanisvong. "If we achieve that, then we believe Lao coffee can penetrate markets around the world". There are other problems too.“

„Colombia remains the only premium single origin coffee able to compete successfully in the arena of canned supermarket blends. Although it ranks second to Brazil in total coffee production -- with about 12 percent of the world's total coffee production compared to Brazil's 30 to 35 percent -- most of Colombia's 12 percent is excellent coffee, grown at high altitudes on small peasant holdings, carefully picked, and wet-processed. The Colombia Federation of Coffee Growers ranks among the world's most thorough-going and successful efforts at organizing and supporting small-holder coffee farmers.“
