„Cautious optimism over coffee market prospects: In his closing address to the Sintercafe conference in San José, Costa Rica on 10 November 2005, the Executive Director, Mr. Néstor Osorio stated that it was now possible to hope that over the next two years price levels could reach levels that would at least cover the cost of production and provide some additional income. This would be a slow process, but essentially arises from a greater balance between supply and demand.“

„Costa Rica has set the standards for fine wet-processed coffee for the rest of Central and South America.  The most famous coffees by region are Tarrazu, Tres Rios, Herediá, and Alajuela.  Most Costa Rican coffee comes from a hybrid called caturra and is characterized as bright and full bodied.  Other popular varieties are Mondo Novo and Catuai.  The best coffees, which are grown above 3,900 feet, are designated as "strictly hard bean".  The "good hard bean" classification is given to coffees grown from 3,300 to 3,900 feet.“

„The coffees of central Costa Rica comprise one of those classic origins that is respected but not fawned over. Although Costa Rica produces a variety of coffees, those that reach American specialty coffee menus usually are very high-grown Strictly Hard Bean (SHB) coffees from regions near the capital of San Jose in the central part of the country: Tarrazu, Herediá, Tres Rios, Volcan Poas. At best Costa Rica coffees from these regions are distinctive in a way that defies simple, romantic description. When good they are clean, balanced, and resonantly powerful.“

„The good co-operatives are working on this. About 40% of Costa Rican coffee now goes through co-operatives, and the British party was interested to find how hard the co-ops were working to change the individual farmer’s idea of what coffee could do. They are having some success, and their farmers are reasonably well off, and looking forward to the next internet auctions in May. Last year, the best coffee fetched $10.35 per pound, which had an encouraging effect on individual farmers.“

„Last November, I spent a week in Costa Rica, politically and socially the most progressive country in Central America and a long-time leader in coffee quality and technology. Costa Rica's success has resulted in a higher standard of living than its neighbors and in the highest coffee production costs in Central America. It is a country famous for its environmental stewardship and has successfully dealt with many issues that its poorer neighbors have yet to confront (such as water pollution from coffee milling). Visiting this beautiful country at a time of crisis in coffee offered valuable insight into the problems all producers of fine, washed arabica coffees are soon likely to face.“
