Indian coffee board- monthly magazine- cover story -soil fertility and major nutrient management in coffee plantations (#)
„Since coffee is grown under shade in India, it is important to state that there is a considerable degree of relation between the shade pattern, light intensity and the nutrients up take by coffee. It has been estimated that in Indian coffee plantations with mixed shade trees the coffee fields receive on an average of 10 tons of shade litter inclusive of dadap lopping contributing considerable amounts of nutrients. But the mineralization of nutrients in them lakes years together and all the nutrients are not available to the plants as leaching and evaporation lose some quantities.“

„For the healthy economic level of coffee production one need to supply all the essential nutrients so that they are not deficient in soil as well as in plant tissues. The coffee plant requirement of major nutrients (NPK), secondary nutrients [Ca, Mg and S(now a days considered as major nutrient)] as well as micro-nutrients (Cl, Mn, Zn, B, Fe, Cu and Mo) should be well understood through soil tests“

„SHADE-GROWN: Left to nature, coffee bushes grow under a canopy of shade trees in tropical forests. Large, one-crop plantations typically are cleared of shade trees to achieve more efficient planting. These sun-exposed plantations have drawn criticism on many levels -- destruction of the rain forest, increased use of chemicals and so on.“

„The bulk of the nutrients go into the preparation of so called WOODS, which bear the coming year’s crop. In simple terms the coffee plant has a BIOLOGICAL CLOCK within, which in turn programmes the plant almost one year in advance as to where the respective photosyntahtes should be Tran located to produce fruits, leaves, productive woods, shoots and other material. This requires a constant supply of Macro as well as Micro nutrients in addition to growth promoting substances. The rich organic matter and humus provides the ideal set up for plant programming.“

„Growing arabica coffee in India is an agroforestry activity wherein coffee is cultivated under a well maintained tree canopy as shade for the coffee plants. Good overhead shade is a basic requirement for healthy growth of plants in view of the weather conditions prevailing in our coffee tracts. The most important reason why shade needs to be maintained is the build up of stem borer under unshaded conditions.“

„In fact, the gross domestic product (GDP) which is an International barometer indicating the health of the economy directly depends on agriculture. Looking back in time, Shade grown Coffee Plantations have played a significant role in contributing to the GDP of the Country and more importantly, providing much needed foreign exchange during the early part of this century. Today, the situation is very different. The global crisis of plummeting price realizations below the average cost of production, over the last four years has taken coffee growers to the brink of disaster.“
