„Essentially the imbalance in the market was caused by excessive new planting of coffee in the mid 1990s following a price rise caused by a frost in Brazilian coffee areas in 1994. Subsequently Brazil has been able to maintain high levels of production with the help of a continued depreciation of the local currency against the dollar while Vietnam's production has also increased substantially, mainly because production costs are very low as a result of high yields arising from intensive care of coffee trees coupled with substantial use of fertilizers.“

„Mr. Carlos Brando from Brazil presented the "Brazilian Experience to Promote Coffee Consumption" covering a comprehensive overview of coffee consumption in Brazil during 1990's and highlighted several steps taken to promote coffee consumption. Coffee consumption was promoted by creating awareness among different segments of the population by disseminating the positive health effects of coffee through media and messages. The consumer was targeted before the medical professionals in order to improve the domestic coffee consumption.“

„The Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association is promoting a series of actions with its own resources for many years and during this time it developed a partnership with international importers and representatives in the following markets: United States, United Kingdom, Germany; Switzerland; Italy; Spain and Japan. For sales to continue their ascending path in those markets we have to give support to our present clients and conquer new buyers through visits, lectures, samples, promotions and specialty coffee sampling.“

„However, over the years Brazil's share of the "price" coffee market has shrunk, and the Brazilian government, which once controlled every facet of Brazilian coffee, has shifted to an open market, hands-off policy, allowing growers to cut their own deals with exporters and importers. Consequently, the most ambitious growers, no longer forced by government regulation to combine their own coffees with coffees from other farms, are attempting to market their beans separately as fancy estate origins. In other words, they are proposing that coffees from their farms are ready to take their place on the stage as soloists rather than simply as elegantly smooth backups to the Kenyas, Guatemalas, and other stars of the coffee world.“

„Producers & traders are now anxiously looking at the 2003-04 season as the first chance of a breakthrough where demand may actually be ahead of supply, anticipating a sharp fall in Brazil's production in an "off" year. However, crucial to any estimate of global production is Brazil's production potential given its current coffee tree population of over 5 billion (up from 3 bln in '95). The key question, therefore, is what is the minimum and maximum that Brazil can produce under normal weather conditions, in "on" and "off" years.“
