Indiacoffee - Indian Coffee, Monthly magazine - Cover Story - The North-East Coffee Eco-Type (#)
„Gradually in the early 20th century Arabica coffee made its entry in North-East, albeit on a small scale. By the 1940s, the North-East tea heartland had 100 acres of Arabica coffee, cultivated in small holdings in the same Khasi and Jaintia hills, considered as the centres of origin of Coffea khasiana and Coffea jenkensii. Land survey reports of the 1940s indicate the replacement of the indigenous coffee varieties by exotics in the region. This shift could have been induced by the inability of the indigenous species to change into commercial propositions.“

„Monsooned coffees are prepared at the curing factories situated on the West coast. Only whole crop Arabica Cherry and Robusta Cherry coffees are selected for monsooning. In order to ensure the quality of monsooned coffee, only 'A' grade of both Arabica Cherry and Robusta Cherry are subjected to monsooning.“

„The mere mention of the North-East conjures images of verdant forests, amazing wildlife and endless acres of tea plantations. In fact, people sipping copious amounts of 'Sah' or 'Chai' is a common sight. However, the last few years have seen a remarkable shift among trendsetters - to coffee!“

„The cost of production (1995 costs) varied, depending on the size of holdings, between 37.2 to 47.2 US cents/lb (82.01 to 116.09 US cents/kg) in Arabica holdings and 28.3 to 38.3 US cents/lb (62.39 to 84.44 US cents/kg) in Robusta holdings. The cost of establishment (for a four-year period at 1995 prices) was approximately US$1,600/ha for Arabica and US$1,200/ha for Robusta. If amortization of the establishment cost is taken into consideration (at an interest rate of 15 percent) the cost of Arabica increases by 10 US cents/lb and that of Robusta by 8 US cents/lb.“

„Very little information on domestic coffee consumption is available except for proprietary information available with large players in the market. Before devising any strategy for growing domestic coffee consumption, the Coffee Board commissioned a comprehensive, nationally representative study on beverage habits, practices and attitudes.“
