India coffee - Indian Coffee, monthly magazine - The Social Dimension-what price the good bean (#)
„As the global "coffee crisis" threatens to become an endemic problem of the coffee industry, buyers are seeking to project themselves as fair players in the coffee mart, to avoid a backlash from consumers and activists. Their strategy involves alliances with non-governmental organizations, with outputs in the form of Fair Trade and Eco labels and certification programmes. In the process, the coffee sector has expanded to include organizations such as Coffee Kids, Sustainable Harvest and TransFair International, besides NGOs focusing on the conservation of natural resources. In effect, these organizations become stakeholders in the farm-to-table coffee chain, and provide support as lobbyists and advocacy groups.“

„Likewise primary producers also need to look at forward integration into processing of value added coffees at origins through joint ventures/partnerships; more so in countries like India that have a potential domestic market also. New types of producer-buyer relationships such as contract farming also need to be given impetus along with development and promotion of "fair trade" coffees. With the coffee industry the world over undergoing a "secular" change, producers need to be innovative, goal oriented and forward looking. The traditional mind set of the coffee grower has to change and in this new environment, it is producers with entrepreneurial vision and managerial capacity who will survive and succeed.“
