  „Supermarkets and hypermarkets still play the leading role in the distribution of coffee drinks, accounting for 58.6% of volume sales in 2001. As the majority of US hot drinks consumption is non-premium fresh or instant coffee, supermarkets and hypermarkets benefit from relying primarily on brands such as Folgers and Maxwell House. "Other" channels which include both franchised and independent coffee houses saw their share of retail hot drinks volume increase by 4.2 percentage points between 1997 and 2001, to 29.2%. The practise of coffee houses such as Starbucks or Peet's selling their fresh bean or ground coffee for take-home consumption has come into great prominence in recent years.“
