„In Costa Rica, rainfall, relative humidity and temperature tend to be lower in the higher altitudes, although there are significant differences between the Pacific and Atlantic regions of the country. Altitude influences climate and affects the overall size and hardness of the coffee bean, as well as the quality of the brew, particularly its acidity. In addition, the Arabica variety has special characteristics that produce an aromatic, delicate good-tasting coffee.“

Environmental Conditions for Growing Coffee Environmental Conditions for Growing Coffee

„The equatorial regions at latitudes lower than 10° and altitudes of 3600-6300 feet (Illy, 21).  Frequent rainfall causes almost continuous flowering, which results in two harvesting seasons.  The period of highest rainfall determines the main harvesting period, while the period of least rainfall determines the second harvest season.  Artificial drying with mechanical dryers is performed on coffees grown in this type of culture since rainfall is too frequent for patio drying to occur.  Examples of countries which have this climate are Kenya, Colombia, and Ethiopia (Illy, 21).“

„But Santa Barbara, with its unpredictable rainfall, still has great soils and altitude for coffee. These Northern Honduran coffees, grown near the border of Guatemala, have often been smuggled across the border to be sold as Fraijanes coffee, or "Antigua-type" coffees, due to low domestic coffee prices . hopefully this Cup of Excellence event will change the perception of Honduran coffees. You can see the exact location on the plot of Cup of Excellence coffees I made above. Anyway, I feel sure that this cup is more interesting than 95% of Guatemalan coffees sold in the US!“
