„When the caffeine intake is reduced, the body becomesoversensitive to adenosine. In response, blood pressure drops dramatically, resulting inan excess of blood in the head, leading to the 'caffeine headache.' This headache can lastfrom one to five days, and can be alleviated with an analgesic or with caffeine intake.Further withdrawal symptoms may include irritability, muscle tension, inability toconcentrate or work, and, in extreme cases, nausea and vomiting. Withdrawal symptoms canbegin just 12 hours following your last caffeine indulgence. Symptoms can be counteredwith lots of exercise and sleep.“

„Data were prospectively collected at three time points during gestation on coffee, tea and caffeine intake and on a wide variety of confounders. After adjustment for most of the confounders, coffee, tea or caffeine consumption were significantly associated with reduced birth weight. However, when the data were also corrected for smoking, these associations were no longer significant. In a prospective cohort study which recruited 431 pregnant women and identified all spontaneous abortions after day 21 of gestation and made 7 prospective assessments of caffeine intake, there was no association between caffeine intake and early foetal growth as assessed by crown-rump length on ultrasonic examination (16).“

Effects of Coffee and Tea on Bone Health Effects of Coffee and Tea on Bone Health

„The link between caffeine intake and bone loss is not clear, as many studies have shown. Researchers have found a higher rate of spinal bone loss among coffee drinkers (3 or more cups per day), but bone loss in the hips and legs seem uneffected by caffeine consumption.“

„FACT: Both the American MedicalAssociation's Council on Scientific Affairs and the National Cancer Institute haveconcluded that there is no association between caffeine intake and fibrocystic breastdisease. Studies show that benign breast disease - which is thelumpiness - has absolutely no link to caffeine. I feel completely comfortable with mypatients consuming moderate amounts of caffeine," she added.“

„On a final note, if you are looking for ways to reduce your caffeine intake without giving up coffee or sacrificing taste, there are a couple creative alternatives to decaffeinated coffee. Besides simply drinking less regular coffee, experiment with blending regular coffees naturally low in caffeine with a decaffeinated coffee to create your own favorite low-caffeine coffee. Try mixing one part of a distinctive, full-bodied regular arabica coffee such as Kenya, Yemen Mocha, Sumatra, or Guatemala with two parts of a mild decaffeinated coffee such as Costa Rican or Colombian. The resulting blend will have 80 to 85% less caffeine per cup than popular grocery store coffees and taste like a true specialty coffee.“

„By contrast, four cohort studies reported a significant association between caffeine intake and risk of fracture. In a subset of the Framingham cohort, there was an incremental increase in fracture risk for coffee consumption above two cups per day (41). In the Nurses Health Study, the risk of hip fracture increased three-fold with caffeine intake but only in women younger than 65 years old (42). In the Study of Fractures cohort, the investigators identified 17 independent risk factors and found that caffeine intake was one of the weakest (43).“
