„Physiological effects of caffeine on the human body aresomewhat understood and well documented. The main physiological effect of caffeine appearsto be as a stimulant of the central nervous system and most of the effects observed arebehavioral in nature. Caffeine is associated with an increase in intellectual activity, but this seems to be significant only when the individual is fatigued or bored. Similarly, caffeine has been linked with sleeping problems and although there is evidence to supportthis, the variation from individual to individual is considerable.“

„"Caffeine is the world's most commonly used stimulant, and it's cheap and readily available so people can maintain their use of caffeine quite easily," says Roland Griffiths, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at Johns Hopkins. "The latest research demonstrates, however, that when people don't get their usual dose they can suffer a range of withdrawal symptoms, including headache, fatigue, difficulty concentrating. They may even feel like they have the flu with nausea and muscle pain."“

„The same dose of 200 mg keeps most people awake longer and causes sleep disturbances. Caffeine's stimulant qualities caused the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine to recommend ways to add caffeine to U.S. soldiers' rations. Since caffeine might give an athlete an unfair advantage, the U.S. Olympic Committee considers it a "performance enhancer", and regularly screens athletes for the drug. - from a paper presented at Penn State University by Robert L.“

„Of all the physiological effects of coffee, the best known is that it is a stimulant to the nervous system. One or two cups of coffee can make one feel more awake, alert and able to concentrate. Caffeine has been shown to counteract fatigue and restore flagging performance. However, in sensitive individuals, caffeine may delay the onset of sleep, decrease sleep time and even lower the subjective quality of the sleep.“

„Null's thesis, entitled "A Study of Psychological and Physiological Effects of Caffeine on Human Health," contributes nothing. The stated purpose of his project was to evaluate (1) caffeine's effects on "adrenal function determined by a medical examination," (2) "its perceived psychological effects as recorded in a questionnaire and daily diary, and (3) "the anabolic effect of caffeine according to a theory proposed by Dr. Revici." (Emanuel Revici, MD, was a physician in New York City whose methods were disparaged by the American Cancer Society. State licensing authorities placed Revici on probation in 1988 and revoked his license in 1993 after concluding that he had violated the terms of his probation.)“
