Health and Ecological Issues ()

„Caffeine is addictive, it's true-- research shows that, although humans seem not to develop tolerance to caffeine (ie do not need more and more, over time, to get the same results, unlike, say, heroin) it does appear that caffeine does cause dependence in humans. This means that the body becomes used to receiving a certain amount of caffeine at regular intervals and temporary effects, such as headache or fatigue, will be apparent each time caffeine is not received when the body expects it. These symptoms are, however, short-lived and usually disappear in several days. Slowly tapering off consumption of caffeine will minimise these effects.“

„The vast number of products in which caffeine comes, range from coffee, to tea, to colas, to milk chocolate, and to pain relievers, just to mention a few. Most people are unaware of caffeine's addictive properties. Those who consume 300 mg. or more per day, suffer from withdrawal symptoms if they abruptly cut off their caffeine supply.“

„A No. Coffee drinkers do not require increasing amounts of caffeine over prolonged periods of time (characteristics of addictive substances), and they can moderate or change their consumption with no difficulty. Moreover, coffee consumption does not cause psychosocial effects.“

Is Coffee Addictive? Is Coffee Addictive?

Coffee drinking in moderation, 4-5 cups per day, is perfectly safe for the general population and may confer health benefits. However, it has been suggested that caffeine, the naturally occurring mild central nervous system stimulant found in tea, coffee, and cocoa is an addictive substance. This is simply not the case.“

„Among its many actions, it operates using the same mechanisms that amphetamines, cocaine and heroin use to stimulate the brain. On a spectrum, caffeine's effects are more mild than amphetamines, cocaine and heroin, but it is manipulating the same channels, and that is one of the things that gives caffeine its addictive qualities.“

„Now this again is choice but I prefer to spit out the coffee. It seems a waste but after 12-18 coffees even a die-hard caffeine addict like myself can start to feel a little funny from the effects. Also it's hard work on the taste buds if you're swallowing it all, and you're being unfair on the later coffees. Anyway coffee should be drunk not slurped!“
