Hawaii Coffee Association (#)
„KEALAKEKUA, HAWAII, July 12,2002 - The Kona Coffee Council (KCC) today issued its policy on genetically modified coffee plants to the State and County governments of Hawaii, to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture, to the University of Hawaii, and to the Hawaii Coffee Association. The KCC opposes the introduction of GM coffee stock into the Kona regions, and is asking government officials to impose a moratorium to that effect. (Full policy statement below).“

„Kona coffee is one of the most sought after coffees in the world. The best coffee in Hawaii is harvested on small farms on the slopes of Mount Loa above the Pacific and is wet-processed. The Hawaiian climate provides the perfect cloud cover to prevent the intense rays from the sun, creating what is called automatic shade. Coffee in Hawaii is often of the Typica cultivar. Interestingly, coffee in Hawaii is grown at a relatively low altitude which is said to produce an inferior tasting coffee. However, Hawaiian coffees often display the density, color, and acidity of high grown coffees. Quality is not necessarily a factor of the altitude, but more likely is a factor of how slowly the coffee is grown.“

„Kona Coffee Council, Kona Farmers Alliance, Kona Pacific Farmers Cooperative, Kona Farm Bureau, Hawaii Coffee Association, Hawaii Organic Farmers Association, Hawaii Genetic Engineering Action Network have resolved: “Hawaii State needs to provide Farmer Protection from GE coffee on Hawaii Island (no GE coffee field/greenhouse tests and no commercially grown GE coffee on Hawaii Island) and Biotech Industry Liability for GE coffee economic, environmental or health problems that may occur.” It was noted by Kauai Coffee that “Hawaii Island” should be changed to the “Hawaii Islands”.“

„ Though coffee farms are found throughout the Hawaiian islands, it is Kona coffee, from the large island of Hawaii, that is best known and always in high demand. Nature provides just the right environment for the coffee trees growing on the slopes of the active Mauna Loa volcano. Young trees are planted in black, volcanic soil so new that it often seems the farmers are planting their seedlings in rock instead of soil. Afternoon shade from tropical clouds forms a natural canopy over the trees to protect them from intense sun. Frequent island showers keep the plants nourished with just the right amount of rain.“
