„It turns out that Doug was equally impressed by us alties; we were, in the words of Mike Ferguson, the SCAA marketing director, "for those of us in the specialty coffee industry, almost mythical creatures, true connoisseurs whose relationship with coffee is not necessarily bound to the economic practicalities of running a business." From their point of view, the demand for quality must start with the coffee drinker; without that, companies like Intelligentsia remain rarities, since their quality is a result of the passion of the owner and staff rather than the logic of the market. So Doug, a SCAA board member, wants to create a better market by fostering connections between quality roasters and coffee connoisseurs. The recent move by the SCAA to create a consumer member category is one result; the espresso-in another.“

„As a long-time volunteer for the Specialty Coffee Association of America's committees and board, Jeff has also been very active in the proliferation of barista competitions in the United States. He sponsored and hosted the first SCAA sanctioned Barista Jam in Seattle in February, 2003, and plans to host another in the coming months. As any of us who are active in the promotion of specialty coffee excellence knows, financial gain is not a factor in our participation. But Jeff, who continues to stretch his own budget in order to sponsor such vents as the Barista Jam, the first ever Barista Guild party, held at Coffee Fest Seattle in October, 2003, as well as making funds available to send his baristas to origin and encourage them to volunteer with such groups as a local organization that teaches barista skills to underprivileged youths, has a passion and commitment to barista excellence that is beyond comparison in the United States.“
