„Dick Petersen presented a report on selling coffee to the US Department of Defense in Hawaii Certified Grades and 3X on a contract basis under the buy American Act. Dick wanted to know if he should pursue this further. The board directed Dick to find out more information.“

„Effort to sell Hawaiian coffee to the Dept of Defense. Dick Petersen shared a recap of the history of this effort. His idea is to sell all 3X as well as other grades of coffee. A meeting is scheduled on September 26 at Senator Inouye’s office to get State and Federal legislative support. Dick Petersen, Leta Schooler, and Jim Wayman will attend on behalf of HCA. Dick will write a white paper for the meeting and distribute to the board. Dick will be finding out more information over the next month. Tommy gave an estimate of about 90000 lbs of Kona 3X.“

„Still need to test on effectiveness of ozone on coffee rust. Comments from the board members: Concern is that the bigger risk is from disease coming in through Central American pickers than green coffee and that issue hasn't been addressed. A motion was made stating that, "The Hawaii Coffee Association does not support house bill HB 477 - Banning the importation of green coffee into Hawaii, as we feel the current fumigation procedures are effective. We do not support any importation of green coffee currently outside the present department of agriculture rules; but we do support continuing research on alternative methods to treat imported coffee and the development of programs to monitor coffee pest and disease entry through unfumigated sources.” Motion seconded and approved (with dissenting votes).“

„R.Petersen reported the opportunity to produce a coffee table book on coffees from Hawaii with Brian Wolf, and Colin Campbell. The minimum cost was $100K. Members agreed not to continue with this opportunity due to current economic uncertainty, the high cost, and available time. Members way revisit this item at a later time.“

„Dick needs to know in the next week or two. Advantages to taking one of the booths in the 16 booth HCA consortium is the prime location of the booths, matching funds, use of coffee brewing station, flower leis provided daily. Motion is made to allocate matching funds only to HCA members who participate within the HCA 16 booth commitment at the 2003 SCAA Convention. Those who choose to participate in a booth outside the 16 booth commitment will not qualify for matching funds.“
