„Both situations were related to the falling market conditions occurring after 9/11. A not so directly related force was also that the world coffee market was and continues to be very economically depressed. This depression did wash over the specialty coffee market. We are hopeful and optimistic that both will resume operations soon. “

„The committee requested approval to approach Loomis to come up with a strategy to create a consumer demand for Hawaiian Coffee and to come up with a marketing approach to the coffee industry to provide information to the consumer. „ Though coffee farms are found throughout the Hawaiian islands, it is Kona coffee, from the large island of Hawaii, that is best known and always in high demand. Nature provides just the right environment for the coffee trees growing on the slopes of the active Mauna Loa volcano. Young trees are planted in black, volcanic soil so new that it often seems the farmers are planting their seedlings in rock instead of soil. Afternoon shade from tropical clouds forms a natural canopy over the trees to protect them from intense sun. Frequent island showers keep the plants nourished with just the right amount of rain.“

„Hawaii is important to this process because a marketing order must come from producers and Hawaii is the only producer of coffee in the United States. The goal is to get this passed by the summer of this year by attaching it to an existing bill (the farm bill or trade bill?). “

„We would need 1-3 full time employees and a 10 million dollar line of credit to purchase green coffee. A second option is to have a member procure the contract and buy the coffee who would then subcontract to other roasters and then pay a “finders fee” to the HCA. 5 million pounds is the projected amount of sales of roasted coffee with 1 million pounds of green 3X being used.“
