„There seems to be some confusion on the definition of what a defect is with regards to these standards. A suggestion was given to send a letter to the SCAA in support of raising coffee import standards provided that they define defects as full black, full sour, or foreign materials and that the defects are measured by weight, not by count. The NCA concern is this will be a disadvantage to American roasters since other countries will not be held to that standard and can import the roasted coffee and compete with American roasters.“

„Ideas to better educate on mail imports is to have letters sent to the original importers of coffee to pass on when they resell coffee. Another is to send a letter to the companies that do mail orders of green coffee to inform them of the Hawaii regulations. Skip Bittenbender spoke on methyl bromide and ozone treatment. Ozone treatments have been shown to work on coffee berry borer with no negative taste effects.“

„Pavilion at 2002 SCCA Convention: There was a discussion or the ground rules for participating in the Hawaii pavilion at the 2002 SCAA convention in Anaheim California. Possible exhibitors are asked to look at the ground rules for participation and be ready to work out booth selection and design concerns at a meeting during the HCA convention in Maui in July. Contact Steve Hicks for a copy of the Pavilion ground rules. Japan Coffee reverse trade mission: This year the Hawaii coffee growers and processors will have an opportunity to be introduced to the coffee market in Japan, the 3rd largest in the world.“

„A theme for the conference is needed as well as key note speakers and other topics. Also need to get into Fresh Cup and other trade journals as well as set up promotions at the SCAA. Need to develop a page to include with mailing to dealers. Suggestion for theme is “Discover Coffees from Hawaii” and tie it in to Hawaii coffee promotion on the mainland.“

„March 19 a Kona coffee cupping competition will be held at the Annex. All Kona farms are invited to send samples to the PCCA office (as well as coffees from the other islands for tasting but that will not be included in the contest). Need 3 three pound green samples. They are soliciting 30 different farms which will be narrowed to 10 which will then be cupped.“
