„Despite the potential value of shade coffee for bird populations, only Greenberg and coworkers (1997a) have quantified some aspects of resource use by birds in shade plantations. Therefore, the objective of this study is to describe where and how birds forage in shade coffee plantations to determine the food resources utilized by birds in shade coffee plantations in the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. These observations will allow us to evaluate the importance of the shade overstory relative to the coffee understory in attracting birds to coffee plantations.“

„Sarah then introduced Celeste and Rey. Rey (a barista) had worked four months on several coffee plantations last year. He spoke about his life on the plantation, how he worked 20 to 30 days without a day off, how he carried 50 pound sacks on his back at the end of his workday (the hike to town took two to three hours while carrying 50 pounds on his back). He described his adobe home---no inside plumbing, no electricity, etc.“

„The coffee crisis and a history of inequality conspire to keep them put. Most households earn a meager living often as little as a dollar a day picking coffee on the big plantations. Plantation owners can easily lock up 300-400 hectares, squeezing families into little more than their 50ft square plots. Don't believe the Malthusian population specialists who blame the poor for overpopulation and land degradation.“

„The amazing fact is that coffee habitat and nature bring out the best chemistry in sustaining each others needs. Many foreigners who visit the plantation remark that Indian coffee plantations are bird and game sanctuaries. The architectural detail of the coffee mountain is astounding.“

„Around 1650, coffee importation into England began and coffeehouses opened in Oxford and London. Coffee planting began in the English colonies, but a disease wiped out the plantations, leading the English to re-plant them with tea instead. By the 18th century, the beverage had become popular in Europe, and European colonists had introduced coffee to tropical countries worldwide as a plantation crop to supply domestic demand. During the 19th century, European demand for coffee was so strong that when genuine coffee beans were scarce, people developed similar-tasting substitutes from various roasted vegetable substances, such as chicory root, dandelion root, acorns, or figs.“
