„We buy our fresh beef from a strictly limited number of approved suppliers in the UK and Ireland. We work in partnership with these suppliers and the farmers to ensure the safety and quality of [our] beef and are therefore able to keep track of all stages and links in the production chain.(26) However, BSE -- so-called mad-cow disease -- the subject of this leaflet and the need for a reassuring consumer message, is only the latest in a long line of trading and production systems which have failed with a direct and discernible impact on people: non-tamper-proof Tylenol tablets, HIV contaminated blood products, poor supervision of building regulations et al. At any scale and for most economic sectors, it is certainly necessary to question whether legislation is a part of the equation of future success in fair trade. The World Trade Organisation rules, for example, opposes regulation that judges the quality of a product by the way in which it has been produced.“

„Sales in Ireland and the UK have just started. Next to building up a coffee business Martine also worked as a professional freelance copywriter and wrote in her mother language Dutch loads of articles on coffee. Two books too: one dedicated to the conscious coffee lover (‘Koffie kàn te boek’), another one for the Royal Association of Belgian Coffee Roasters (‘Koffie een vriend’, translated into French as ‘Café mon ami’. Ordering this official coffee book is possible via www.koffiebureaucafe.be .)“

„It says multinational coffee companies are making large profits by charging consumers in rich countries 1,500 percent more than farmers in poor countries are paid for their beans. Coffee prices on the world market average US$1.10 a kilogram, while production cost is around $1.76. "The worst may be over for embattled coffee growers like us, with prices finally rising off record lows," said Nguyen Trong, owner of nearly 20 hectares [49 acres] of coffee plantation in Daklak province in the country's central highlands. "The surging prices are due to the increase of coffee prices in the world market and the decrease of the country's coffee output," said the chairman of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, Doan Trieu Nhan.“

„In the context of an unfair global trade system, UK consumers are making a positive difference to the lives of tens of thousands of farmers in developing countries by choosing to buy Fairtrade coffee for the home, in the workplace and in coffee shops. This consumer support is also sending a strong message to government and the coffee industry that coffee farmers should receive a sustainable price for their commodity.“
