Global Exchange : Stunted coffee market pushes Ethiopians into drug trade (#)
„But today there's too much coffee in the world, and prices are at 30-year lows. While premium Ethiopian coffees fetch up to $12 a pound in the United States, Ethiopia's farmers get only 15 cents for it.“

„Washed coffees of Ethiopia include Ghimbi and Yirgacheffe. The former is more balanced, heavier, and has a longer lasting body than the Harrars. The latter are more mild, fruitlike, and aromatic.“

„Ethiopia's problems are relatively simple to understand. Because the Ethiopian coffee industry, like many others, depends mainly on the work of small-holding farmers with virtually no access to technology and a limited supporting infrastructure (most Ethiopia farmers literally must carry their coffee to the mill on their heads), production costs are relatively high. And, as we know, prices paid farmers for green coffee are now at an all-time low. Which means that, for Ethiopia, income from the sale of coffee simply does not cover the total cost of production.“

„For drip coffee I would suggest experimenting with Guatemalan, Costa Rican, Tanzania peaberry, Ethiopian (the Ethiopians are ALL good: Harar, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe). Also you may like to try Sulawesi, Kenya and maybe even an exotic like Kona or Jamaican Blue Mountain (it's terribly expensive but also a unique coffee).“

„Ethiopian coffees can vary greatly from lot to lot. It takes A LOT of cupping to find the specific lot of coffee that is superior. MAO Horse imports a lot of coffee, but each year one specific "chop" (lot number) out-cups the others. Since lots differ in character, and I do so much to find the best lot, we are now listing the Lot Number in the description of the coffee.“

„The recent terrifying misfortunes of the Ethiopianpeople, including drought, famine, and civil war, have reduced the availability of allEthiopian coffees, particularly the washed varieties. Those Ethiopian coffees that do makeit to the store bins will probably be expensive, but still worth every penny.“
