„Lucy Hitchcock Seck Has Spent Much Of Her Life Spreading Respect For Human Dignity -- Hitchcock Seck sells bags of certified "fair-trade" coffee after services at the Unitarian Universalist Association. With certified Fair Trade products, she's sure farmers will get a bigger share of the money consumers spend, instead of it going to middlemen in the distribution chain. Hitchcock Seck knows from traveling in Central America and Africa that a few dollars can make a world of difference for peasant farmers.Dignity and justice are Unitarian principles that Hitchcock Seck strives to practice, not just preach. That's she is mobilizing against the FTAA in Miami.“

„The sale of fair-trade-certified coffee on college and university campuses has been uplifting for the coffee industry, providing a sure channel through which fair-trade coffee can be distributed. And students-society's moral fighters-may turn out to play an important role in eventually ending the coffee crisis. Not only do students support fair-trade coffee by drinking it, they are also forming organizations and educating themselves on the positive social effects of fair trade.“

„to make sure that our cup of coffee .is fair-trade just simply fits in with who we say we try to be." Wicca Davidson, a real estate agent who chairs the kitchen service committee at her synagogue, Adat Shalom in Bethesda, said she decided to use fair-trade coffee at all the synagogue's social gatherings a year ago because "I wanted .something that was more responsible in terms of the people growing the coffee." The congregation "was delighted," the Chevy Chase resident added. Fair-trade coffee like Equal Exchange's, which costs from $5 to $6.80 a pound, is more expensive than the cheapest roasts that churches often buy at discount supermarkets but about the same in price as gourmet brands.“

„To simplify, the fair-trade movement determines a formula for a "fair" price for coffee paid to farmers, a price that will make no one rich but which will help subsistence farmers avoid absolute misery. The certifying agency, in this case TransFair USA, also confirms that the farmers who receive this fair price are small holders organized in democratically run cooperatives who follow positive environmental practices. The modest premium paid the farmers according to the fair-trade formula is passed on through the system to coffee lovers, who presumably will happily pay a couple of pennies more per cup, given how much those pennies help struggling farmers. The controversy mainly focuses on whether paying people for coffee on the basis of formula and democratic organization rather than on the basis of quality is wise in the long run. Some of us, me included, have dedicated ourselves to creating a culture around coffee analogous to the culture around wine, with the long-term goal of assuring that people who produce great coffee are paid great coffee prices, rather than the insulting pittance they receive now.“

The price of conventionally grown coffee on the international market is about 42 cents per pound while organic coffee prices fluctuate between 65 cents and 85 cents per pound, the groups said.“
