„The principle challenges facing Manos Campesinas today are increasing the demand for their coffee (they only export approximately half of their total production), encouraging the farmers to convert to organic production (their goal is to be 100% certified organic), assisting them to diversify their crops so that they won’t be so hard hit by declining coffee prices, and promoting the active participation of women in the daily life of the cooperatives.“

TransFair Canada: The Impact of Fair Trade in Guatémala
„ASOBAGRI and GUAYA’B set up a medical insurance program for their members and families. Manos Campesinas has chosen to promote the empowerment of women by supporting the creation of a group of women who roast and directly sell its own coffee on local markets. The three co-ops came together to create an informal consortium called “La Tabla”. Their common goal is to develop a new quality control infrastructure and increase their organic production by 20% for the 2004-2005 harvest.“

„Guatemala - Christian Rasch, vice president of the Guatemalan National Coffee Association, Anacafé, announced in the closing ceremony of the International Competition “The Exceptional Cup 2004” the names of the 23 coffee lots that will be sold through the Internet on June 15. Topping the list were Huehuetenango in the first, second, fifth and ninth place; Jalapa in the third and seventh position, followed by Chimaltenango, Sacatepéquez (where the famous Antigua region is located) and Alta Verapaz (where Cobán is from). For the first time, a cooperative ranked as high as to be in the top five.“
