Global Exchange : DEVELOPMENT: Agricultural Subsidies Lock-In Coffee Farmers - Report ()

„Some civil society groups have responded by pressuring roasters in rich nations. In September 2002, Oxfam launched its 'Coffee Rescue Plan', which called on the world's major coffee roasters -- including Kraft Foods, Nestle, Procter & Gamble and Sara Lee -- to increase the market for Fair Trade coffee, bring the current oversupply of coffee back into line with demand, and to help ensure that farmers are able to earn a decent living. The report predicts the situation will likely improve because of long-term historic cycles that will lead to supply eventually aligning more closely with market demand, so that prices will recover somewhat. But it warns that a price recovery would only be temporary.“

CoffeeGeek - Coffee companies under fire as millions face ruin CoffeeGeek - Coffee companies under fire as millions face ruin

„The “Big Four Roasters” are extremely profitable, with margins estimated at between 17% to 26% on billion-dollar coffee sales. However, Oxfam says their business strategy is increasingly risky. Coffee quality is falling because farmers don’t have the money to take care of their crops. The companies have made savings but have done next to nothing to help the poor farmers who find themselves at the wrong end of the corporate supply chain.“

Tea & Coffee 05/03 - Getting the Skinny on Sample Roasters: Part I Tea & Coffee 05/03 - Getting the Skinny on Sample Roasters: Part I

„Then, one roaster manufacturer posed this question: “Do these small machines really produce a decent enough roast to help determine a green sample’s worth?” It all comes down to that. In response, listed below are some new sample roasters that just might help in the green coffee buying decision. For the record, in my opinion, not one of these machines has the kind of variable settings that would qualify them as a commercial roaster. But, the point of this article is to determine if they could assist in finding a great coffee.“

Hot Rod Home Coffee Roasters, The Spirit of Invention : Homemade and Seriously Modified! Hot Rod Home Coffee Roasters, The Spirit of Invention : Homemade and Seriously Modified!

„Either they don't offer enough control of the roast, are too expensive, or just don't allow the roaster (uh, the person that is) to express themselves. The homemade or seriously modified commercial roasters on this page are alternately amusing and intimidating in appearance, but whatever the case, they probably work very well. And if they don't, you can bet they will be reconfigured endlessly until they do by their respective owners. A disclaimer on behalf of every roaster on this page: modifying electric and gas roasting equipment is dangerous.“
