Global Exchange : Center to raise fair trade's profile (#)
„When roaster and importer Lola Savannah began selling fair-trade coffee, many consumers were confused by the certification, which guarantees farmers at least $1.26 a pound, much higher than the volatile market prices. "It seems like today, two years later, there's still a gap," said Duke Furth, owner of the Houston-based coffee and tea company. Fair-trade coffee accounts for about 20 percent of Lola Savannah's sales. Furth hopes to bridge that gap next week when Houstonians visit his aromatic roasting facility and taste fair-trade-certified coffee from countries like Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico.“

„The sale of fair-trade-certified coffee on college and university campuses has been uplifting for the coffee industry, providing a sure channel through which fair-trade coffee can be distributed. And students-society's moral fighters-may turn out to play an important role in eventually ending the coffee crisis. Not only do students support fair-trade coffee by drinking it, they are also forming organizations and educating themselves on the positive social effects of fair trade.“

„If Van Orman's customers and a recent survey are any indication, retailer attempts to make the link for its customers between fair-trade coffee and other fairly traded foods will not be difficult. According to Steve French, managing partner of the Natural Marketing Institute in Harleysville, Pa., consumers already are getting the heads up on fair-trade. In NMI's 2003 LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) consumer trends study, 51 percent of the 2,000 general population respondents said that fair trade-certified ingredients were very or somewhat important in their purchase of a particular product.“

„Several coffee importers have found the farmer unable to ship the coffee at these absurdly low prices. The importer is then forced to purchase coffee on the spot market in order to fulfill their obligation to the roaster, who is also suffering in the financial squeeze. In an attempt to help the farmers, several coffee roasters have begun paying premium prices in order to ensure that next year that the same quality coffee will still be available.“

„Beth Ann Caspersen, Quality Control Officer for Equal Exchange, a distinguished green coffee dealer and roasting company, points out that, in fact, there are three additional Fair-Trade origins available in North America: East Timor, Papua New Guinea, and Tanzania. Beth Ann goes on to write that: "non-Latin American Fair Trade coffees have been sold on the U.S. market for much longer than two years. We at Equal Exchange have been offering Fair Trade Tanzanian since 1996 and Fair Trade Sumatran since 1997. I believe others have also been importing some of these Fair Trade non-LA origins before 2002."She concludes with a plug for Fair Trade: "I would also like to point out to your readers the great success Fair Trade producers had at the recent Nicaraguan Cup of Excellence competition where Fair Trade cooperatives took 5 of the top 10 spots, including the best organic, Fair Trade coffee in the competition."“
