„A month spent tracing the route between Boston-area coffee drinkers and the farmers who grow their coffee reveals why protesters like those who disrupted the Group of Eight economic summit in Genoa have picked coffee as a target. Since 1995, labor and consumer groups have been calling on coffee companies - particularly the Seattle-based Starbucks chain - to guarantee better wages and working conditions for farmers abroad.“

„full bodied and rich, yet smooth enough for the casual coffee drinker. For the more "professional strength" coffee drinkers in my office, this coffee holds up very well to their demanding tastes. Everyone is a satisfied customer at our little communal coffee stand.“

„So world coffee prices halved and have remained volatile ever since. Was this break-up of the coffee-makers' cartel good news for coffee drinkers? Not immediately: It took four years for the supermarkets to slash the price of coffee, and then only by 20%. And when prices bounced back in 1994, up 50%, the retail price rose immediately and stayed high despite another fall in world prices in 1995.“

„Today's discerning coffee drinker wants to know about origin, roast, blending, and freshness--and that's just at the level of the bean. Coffee drinkers have an innate appreciation and curiosity about every aspect of their favorite beverage. They are eager to learn about the goatherd Kaldi, the legendary discoverer of coffee, or about the enthusiasm and alarm that met the bean as it spread throughout the Old World. More recent history--such as the development of instant and decaffeinated coffees, as well as the role that coffee served as part of the bulwark of America's Cold-War policy towards Latin America--is equally appealing.“

„E.E. Agardh and colleagues in Sweden, discovered that the relative risk among heavier coffee consumers was significant lower than among lighters drinkers. In men, those who drank five or more cups of coffee a day demonstrated a 40% lower incidence than those who drank only two or less cups. In women, the risk was reduced by 74% in those who drank five or more cups versus two or less.“
