„I want to learn more about the supply side of fair trade coffee when I'm in Central America. Do you have any Costa Rican contacts or information on Costa Rican farmers who grow free trade coffee? I'm most interested in the interaction between people and their environment and I think I'd like to do an independent project on some specific aspect of the biological implications of organically grown coffee. I know organic does not necessarily mean fair trade coffee, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bit of overlap.“

„Costa Rica has set the standards for fine wet-processed coffee for the rest of Central and South America. The most famous coffees by region are Tarrazu, Tres Rios, Herediá, and Alajuela. Most Costa Rican coffee comes from a hybrid called caturra and is characterized as bright and full bodied. Other popular varieties are Mondo Novo and Catuai. The best coffees, which are grown above 3,900 feet, are designated as "strictly hard bean". The "good hard bean" classification is given to coffees grown from 3,300 to 3,900 feet.“

„The only way you can get down around 1.25/lb green is if your using the lessor quality coffees from central america or others. Even if you're buying in larger quantities a good Costa Rican Tarrazu is around $1.60, a great Tarrazu is around $3/lb. Yemen's around $4, Kenya AA is around $2. My point is that you can't say somethings to high if you don't even know what it's made of.“

„While still the world’s largest producer of coffee, exports of that commodity are less than 2% of the total. As one Costa Rican farmer pointed out, how much their huge internal consumer market for coffee pays and the effect that has on inflation is of far greater concern to policymakers than whether coffee farmers can make ends meet. Hence, the counter intuitively high estimates for this year’s crop emanating from Brazil itself.“
