CoffeeGeek - Press Pots - Small - Robert Epps's Review (#)

„I was reading the last posted review while sipping a cup of home-roasted, french-pressed coffee, and just had to post my two cents. I find french-press coffee to be the best tasting coffee there is, matching or even surpassing what you can make with an expensive espresso machine. French-press coffee is strong, but the true flavors of the beans are brought out more fully, without the bitterness of strong coffee made other ways. (Remember, if you don't like your coffee strong, you will end up with much better tasting "weak" coffee if you brew it strong and water it down with water just off the boil, rather than brewing it with more water and/or less coffee.)“

Coffee: Resources for home espresso (#)

„(Here, it seems like you're ingestingthem in solid form, instead!) Many varieties of coffee bean taste good in aFrench press; it's particularly good at making a seriously earthy cup of CentralAmerican coffee. One does far better with a French press than a cheap espressomaker, until one is able to splurge for a Pavoni or a serious pump machine. Iused a French press for ten years; I was the last of my friends to convert to a Pavoni.French presses are a continual chore to clean.“

The Coffee Review - the world's leading coffee buying guide (#)

„First, they need to brew extremely strong (about 3 tablespoons of ground coffee to every 5-6 ounce cup), and second, they need to stir the grounds as they steep, an impossible gesture with automatic filter drip brewers. So if you do prefer a coffee almost as full-bodied as French press but without the French press grit, you may need to experiment with a manual pour-over brewer. After you saturate the grounds, stand over the brewer and stir with a long-handled spoon until most of the coffee has exited the filter.“

„The highest concentration of these constituents occurs in Scandinavian-style (cafestol: 7.2 mg/cup [cup = 150 mL]; kahweol: 7.2 mg/cup) and Turkish-style (cafestol: 5.3 mg/cup; kahweol: 5.4 mg/cup) boiled coffee, while instant, drip-filtered, and percolated coffee brews contain negligible amounts. French press coffee has an average cafestol content of 3.5 mg/cup and kahweol content of 4.4 mg/cup, while espresso coffee has 1 mg/cup of each diterpene (Gross et al., 1997; Urgert et al., 1995b)."“

„Topher is right- bless his soul .When we roasters roast and then blend coffees together for use in an espresso blend, we are doing so with end goal of the coffee being used in an espresso machine- not a french press, drip machine etc. The espresso process will remove certain oils and aromas during the 25+/- extraction. I am sure Topher spends hours playing around with his blends, grinding them and then pulling shots to get the perfect (well almost perfect ) espresso!“

„I was in a similar dilemma a while back and was persuaded to consider a moca brewer and or a French press rather than an inexpensive espresso machine. After a lot of research I decided to take this advise and am now drinking excellent coffee from a French press rather than mediocre espresso. I think it is at least worth looking into. I don’t have any personal experience with a moca brewer, but maybe someone else could chime in on those.“

Selecting a Coffee Brewing Method (#)

French Press: This is one of four methods that will be discussed that utilizes coffee infusions. In this first style, ground coffee is placed in the glass beaker, hot water is added and allowed to steep. The attached tightly fitting plunging device is then pushed to the bottom of the beaker, where the grounds are trapped and above this sits your coffee.“

„The other surviving schools of coffee making were the English Biggin and the French Press. Both fine, non pressurized brewing methods that survive today as the drip cone and of course the French Press. As they rely on a long saturation period without the use of pressure, extra acids are leeched into the brew, which attack the unstable aromatics flavor compounds and sort of erase them.“

Coffee Cupping (#)

„Ideally one should use 55g of coffee per liter of water. The grind should be between a French press size and a drip coffee size. The coffee should be roasted light (Agtron 65). In the industry we often stop the roast about 30 seconds into the first crack long before the start of the second crack.“

Tea & Coffee 02/00 - Quality and Variety in Restaurant Coffee Service (#)

French press service is a big hit among most restaurants surveyed. Since restaurants lose the “created especially for you” effect that is so appealing to customers of espresso bars, French press service proves to be the most elegant way to bring this special touch right to patrons’ tables - not to mention the fact that it makes a rich, unique tasting cup of coffee.“

„This is absolutely vital with many accessories, because if a customer leaves your shop without knowing how something works, at the very least he will become frustrated. Imagine he buys a French press, only to grind your beans too finely and also overextract the coffee. Not only does he end up with a mouthful of sediment, but the coffee is bitter and so is the customer.“

Coffee Buying Tips, Coffee Grinding Tips (#)

„If the cycle takes longer than six minutes, grind your coffee coarser. When using a French press, the coffee will need to be ground extremely coarse. Espresso requires an extremely fine grind...almost powder-like with a slight grittiness. The key to the proper espresso grind is the extraction time.“

The basics of the brew. - coffeecrew.com - victoria, b.c. canada (#)

„The French press method yields the best flavor for non-espresso coffee because there is no paper filter to remove the large colloids that impart the coffee's flavor. However, this method leaves a good deal of sediment in the final cup which is unattractive to some drinkers and may be a source of catalyzed cholesterol according to some recent studies.“

„After working out the abilities of the little Braun grinder I got my partial wish... the french press coffee I made was nearly equal to the stuff I enjoyed so much in Europe. I also figured out pretty quick I could froth milk with the Bodum, so I would make myself big bowls of faux cappuccino. And my drip coffee, produced with a Braun Machine, was amazing.“
