„A sign near the door gives you an idea of what to expect: "The original French Market coffee stand serving cafe au lait and hot beignets 24 hours a day year round." The cafe has been in operation since the 1860s, perched at one end of the venerable French Market, the end which is closest to lovely Jackson Square, the historic heart and sweet soul of the French Quarter. An indoor-outdoor space, the cafe is quintessential New Orleans: tall pillars graced by green and white-striped awnings which flap in the light breeze (as well as during sudden downpours) go hand-in-hand with shiny black ceiling fans whirring softly over a sea of tables and chairs. People laugh and smile and joke here all at once.“http://www.sallys-place.com/beverages/coffee/ big_easy.htm - Cached
Tips on Coffee - The Devil's Cup: Coffee, the Driving Force in History

„By turns worshiped and scorned for its psychoactive effects, the beverage has spawned legends almost as fabulous and seductive as the drink itself. It inspired the Islamic Whirling Dervishes, who slurped the stuff as a prelude to their bouts of religious ecstasy, and is thought to have precipitated the French Revolution, when citizens stormed the Bastille in part to liberate a coffee-deprived Marquis de Sade. To his credit, Allen, who claims he can tell in a sip that the coffee in a particular Ethiopian town is adulterated with smuggled Zairian Robusta beans, wisely avoids the overworked topic of Starbucks and its bid for a global latte empire. Mark Prendergast's social history, Uncommon Grounds (Forecasts, May 17), is more of an omnibus survey of the bean, but Allen's quirky insights more than make up for any scholarly shortcomings.“http://www.tips-on-coffee.com/ print_version.php?s=5387 - Cached
„Soon thereafter coffeefarming started in Ceylon, Southeast Asia and on the island of Bourbon (now Reunion Island). The coffeebush reached Paris via a botanic garden in Amsterdam. A french seaofficer, De Clieu took a plant from this bush and carried it with him across the Atlantic ocean (somehow the coffeeplant survived) to the Westindies and it was this plant who was the "grandmother" to the grandious coffeeplantations in Central and South America. The rest is - history. The coffeehousesThe coffeehouses were the first place where people learned about the brew. The importance of the coffeehouses for the spreading of coffee cannot be valued enough.“http://hem.bredband.net/akeisr/caffe/ history.html - Cached

„But it was the Dutch who first started the spread of the coffee plant in Central and South America, where today it reigns supreme as the main continental cash crop. Coffee first arrived in the Dutch colony of Surinam in 1718, to be followed by plantations in French Guyana and the first of many in Brazil at Para. In 1730 the British introduced coffee to Jamaica, where today the most famous and expensive coffee in the world is grown in the Blue Mountains. By 1825, South and Central America were on track towards their coffee destiny.“http://www.ico.org/acoff/cofstor.htm - Cached
Tea & Coffee 06/03 - Vietnamese Coffee and the Plight of the Montagnards

„Somehow, coffee cultivation continued in this melee, although with difficulty. When American anthropologist Gerald Hickey visited Khe Sanh in May 1964, French coffee pioneer Felix Polin had just been killed by North Vietnamese communist forces, and his son Philippe sent his wife and children to live on the coast. A few months later, frustrated Montagnards formed FULRO (Front Unifié de Lutte des Races Opprimées, or United Struggle Front for the Oppressed Races), a militant group that took over five U.S. Special Forces camps in the Central Highlands, objecting to the “systematic genocidal policy” of the “expansionist Vietnamese.”“http://www.teaandcoffee.net/0603/special.htm - Cached

„Many great minds of Europe used this beverage, and forum, as a springboard to heightened thought and creativity. In the 1700's, coffee found its way to the Americas by means of a French infantry captain who nurtured one small plant on its long journey across the Atlantic. This one plant, transplanted to the Caribbean Island of Martinique, became the predecessor of over 19 million trees on the island within 50 years. It was from this humble beginning that the coffee plant found its way to the rest of the tropical regions of South and Central America.“http://www.coffeeuniverse.com/ university_hist.html - Cached

„Uncommon Grounds provides some fascinating tidbits. Did you know that coffeehouses helped spawn the French and American revolutions? Or that coffee supplanted alcohol as a favorite breakfast drink in Britain in the late 1600s, and later became a patriotic American beverage after the Boston Tea Party? Pendergrast also details the rise and fall of regional coffee brands in the United States, the role of advertising in the industry, the global economic impact of coffee prices, and the recent emergence of specialty-coffee retailers--Starbucks, for example.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0465054676/ref%3dnosim/ lexico - Cached

„1727: The Brazilian coffee industry get its start when Lieutenant Colonel Francisco de Melo Palheta is sent by his government to arbitrate a border dispute between French and Dutch colonies in Guiana. Not only does he settle the dispute, he also strikes up a secret liaison with the wife of French Guiana's governor. Although France guarded its New World coffee plantations to prevent cultivation from spreading, the lady said good-bye to Palheta with a bouquet in which she hid cuttings and fertile seeds of coffee.“http://www.javacafe.com/cofhistory.htm - Cached
„ Most other coffees are filtered. Café au lait, coffee mixed with scalded milk, is a traditional French breakfast drink, as is café con leche in countries where Spanish is spoken. Coffee flavoured with chicory is a speciality of New Orleans. Connoisseurs pay dearly for Mocha from the Yemen region of Arabia, Blue Mountain from Jamaica, Kona from Hawaii, or other so-called speciality coffees from Africa, Indonesia, or Latin American-all premium Arabica varieties.“http://www.britishcoffeeassociation.org/ id27.htm - Cached

„A cafe au lait was probably never served in Julie's home when she grew up. This traditionally French drink is equal parts brewed coffee and steamed milk. To Julie, it's "a very weak latte." She also doesn't serve it at her cafe, since they don't offer brewed coffee. What they offer as a substitute is an Americano, which is a shot of espresso followed by hot water to fill the cup.“http://www.sallys-place.com/beverages/coffee/ cappu_frappu.htm - Cached

„Perhaps legislation can be brought in to so that the package labels clearly state the facts as to the proportion of chicory used. In the old days, "French Coffee" (with chicory mixed) used to be in green colour, and pure coffee used red colour. Perhaps some colour coding guidelines could be brought in. I think the Coffee Board needs to do an extensive study on the long-term impact of the growth in chicory usage.“http://www.indiacoffee.org/newsletter/9/ openhouse.html - Cached
