Franz Kafka: Coffee Achiever? (INeedCoffee.com) (#)
„"But what could I do without it? If it weren’t for black coffee Montly wouldn’t keep me for a minute. I simply don’t know how I would get on in the shop if I didn’t have a big bottle like this under the counter, for I’ve never dared to risk stopping the coffee-drinking[.]" Kafka never visited the United States, but from this scene in Amerika, it is clear that Kafka foresaw an All-American type of student, a workaholic and caffeine-driven busybody. The student drinks the coffee not for the love of it, but as a drug to keep himself fueled in a 24/7 cycle of activity.“

„They did not identify the good guys, their natural allies, before unloading on the trade. Didn’t anyone tell these people that you don’t raise the specialty community’s confidence in your goals by threatening Peet's with a picket line?“

„It's out of print officially, but the SCAA (www.scaa.org ) has done a reprint by photographing a mint original donated by Don Schoenholt to the organization. It isn't cheap: about $100, but Sweet Marias (linked above) sells it for $90. This book was the be all, end all of coffee knowledge in 1935 when it was published, and in many ways continues to be that way today. It's often refered to as the "bible" of the world of coffee, and I believe it.“

„A quick historical glance and current update of our customer, a enormously successful chain of coffee houses started in Long Beach, California, It’s A Grind coffee houses, underscores that you don’t have to redefine a specialty coffee sales channel to become the fastest growing coffee house franchise in America.“

„At first glance The Birth of Coffee looks like just another coffee table book - glossy pictures and minimal substance - the kind you leaf through but don’t really read. A careful look at the preface, however, will reveal to any serious coffee professional the authenticity and depth that the co-authors Linda and Daniel Lorenzetti, bring to the subject. The images portrayed will bring a rush of senses to the eye, the nose, the hands and the heart, especially if you have ever traveled to a coffee-producing country.“

„One thing Don did was introduce me to the writer of the excellent book Uncommon Grounds. That book is, of course, written by Mark Pendergrast, and I got a chance to talk to him a bit about the book, how much I liked it and we ended up talking about CoffeeGeek a bit. Mark was very intrigued by the site, one he hasn't seen yet, and even mentioned an offer of writing a review or two for the website, on coffee-related books.“
