„"Many families who make their living from coffee are impoverished and desperate," says Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation which awards the Fairtrade Mark to coffees where the retailer has paid the Fairtrade price. "Evidence of low and declining living standards is clear. Many farmers have been struggling for years as they have failed to recover their production costs for several harvests running.“

„"Most people love coffee, but they would be appalled if they knew how bad life is for coffee farmers in many countries, "says Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation. "For example in Nicaragua former coffee workers now beg by the road, thousands took part in a March of the Hungry in July and 14 of them died. This poverty is due to the dramatic fall in world coffee prices, for example the world price for arabica coffee has fallen dramatically to $0.65 cents per pound, in comparison with the Fairtrade price of $1.26.“

"Which is why, in line with rising awareness of the Mark, sales of all those delicious Fairtrade foods and drinks are going through the roof with a 90% increase in the past two years alone. It’s great news for Fairtrade farmers".“

But Alistair Smith, international coordinator for Banana Link, a nonprofit British group that promotes the rights of banana workers and small farmers, called Sainsbury's fair-trade prices "unjustified," adding, "It would be all right if a much higher price was going to the producer."“
