Fairtrade | News | Press Release (#)
„This poverty is due to the dramatic fall in world coffee prices, for example the world price for arabica coffee has fallen dramatically to $0.65 cents per pound, in comparison with the Fairtrade price of $1.26. The Co-op's decision will help some coffee co-operatives build a brighter future, it offers a real choice to Britain's shoppers and sends a timely wake-up call to the worldwide coffee industry." "“

„Stylish new Espresso and Americano organic Fairtrade coffees are being launched by Percol into Waitrose and Budgens supermarkets from June. Made from pure arabica beans, these high roast coffees are designed to appeal to a younger market than Percol’s current Fairtrade coffee range. Equal Exchange also have new origin organic coffees from Colombia and Indonesia, in distinctive gold packaging, and the first Fairtrade organic sugar, which comes from a co-operative in Paraguay.“

„ The main varieties of coffee are arabica and robusta. Arabica has a mild taste and is generally used for ground coffee. Robusta is stronger in taste and is used mainly for instant coffee.“

„By comparrison many of the coops I deal with would produce less than 18mt (or less than a 20' container) every year. Even if we pay above fairtrade prices for their arabica it would take years and years for them to have enough money to pay for certification....My point is sometimes the certification system works, sometimes it is does not. You certainly would be assured that the beans you get that are claimed to be triple certified would be....“
