„The human consequences of the collapse in world market coffee prices - which reached 30 year lows during this year's coffee harvest - are now visible with many small coffee farmers and coffee workers in major coffee producing countries facing financial ruin. A revised edition of the Fairtrade Foundation's report Spilling the Beans on the Coffee Trade shows coffee growers now unable to afford the basics of adequate food, healthcare and education for their families as a direct result of the fallen coffee prices. Fear and uncertainty about the future are compounding the growers' difficulties.“

„Some Fairtrade Marked coffees currently on offer are cheaper than well-known brands. But even if fair trade coffee is as much as 10% more expensive than the venue's current coffee, that still works out at little more than an extra penny per cup.“

Fairtrade brands now account for 14% of the total UK roast and ground coffee market. Stocked by most major supermarkets, Fairtrade foods have become more visible in recent years, with high street chains such as Costa Coffee, Starbucks and Pret A Manger offering a Fairtrade option. Riding high on this visibility, the Fairtrade Foundation and the international umbrella organisation it helped found have also won the King Baudouin International Prize for Development. This is in recognition for their pioneering role in giving disadvantaged producers and workers in the developing world an opportunity to participate directly in international trade at Fairtrade conditions.“

„This poverty is due to the dramatic fall in world coffee prices, for example the world price for arabica coffee has fallen dramatically to $0.65 cents per pound, in comparison with the Fairtrade price of $1.26. The Co-op's decision will help some coffee co-operatives build a brighter future, it offers a real choice to Britain's shoppers and sends a timely wake-up call to the worldwide coffee industry." "“
