„ForesTrade has set up a relief effort bank account. Funds will be forwarded to their partners in Aceh, the Gayo Organic Coffee Farmers Association (PPKGO) who supply Fairtrade coffee to the UK. PPKGO has organized a relief effort and are using the coffee warehouse to shelter hundreds since the disaster. They are also distributing blankets, clothing and food.“

„And he certainly did that. A quietly spoken man, he held audiences across the country spellbound as he told how hard low coffee prices are hitting farmers - and how Fairtrade is changing lives. 'When you buy Fairtrade', he had told a packed launch at the House of Commons, 'you are supporting our democracy.' The co-operative is working, he explained, to build up membership, to improve quality, to find markets, to ensure their kids get a proper education and much more.“

„"Most people love coffee, but they would be appalled if they knew how bad life is for coffee farmers in many countries, "says Harriet Lamb, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation. "For example in Nicaragua former coffee workers now beg by the road, thousands took part in a March of the Hungry in July and 14 of them died. This poverty is due to the dramatic fall in world coffee prices, for example the world price for arabica coffee has fallen dramatically to $0.65 cents per pound, in comparison with the Fairtrade price of $1.26.“

„When you reach for your jar of Fairtrade coffee this morning, the makers hope you will spare a thought for the farmers in the developing world. But a row is brewing between two of the organisations that certify ethical coffee over whose fair trade is the fairest.“

„With organisations to represent their interests, farmers can cut out the middlemen, get a better price, and gain more control over their lives. Coffees with the Fairtrade Mark are bought directly from this type of small farmers' organisation at a guaranteed fair trade price. This covers the cost of production, a basic living wage, and allows for investment, no matter how low the world price drops. Mario Perez, a Nicaraguan farmer who has only recently been able to sell coffee under the fair trade system, says 'Three years ago we practically had to give away our harvest - we were losing money on the deals.“

„For this part of their crop, the farmers receive a guaranteed minimum price. The remaining cocoa is sold to the conventional market where prices have been very low, below the cost of production, for over two years. They have been earning an average of about 2,500 pesos a month which just about covers their costs and allows them living expenses. There is no money left over, but if there was, Ovidia would like to save it to make improvements to their home.“
