„A campaign to boost consumer understanding of fair trade could shortly be coming to a town centre near you. The British Association for Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS), which has 52 member stores throughout the country, is running the project with RISC, the Reading International Solidarity Centre. The emphasis will be on the people behind the products, enabling producers to tell their own stories through leaflets, posters, teaching materials and a website. Project co-ordinator Aileen Garden said: "The prominent location of many Fair Trade shops means they have an invaluable opportunity to act as an educational ‘shop window’ for the whole fair trade movement." To find out more or locate your nearest BAFTS shop, call 0191 386 7948.“

„Through potluck dinners, coffee tastings and awareness building at the weekly farmers’ market, the people of Madison quickly saw the benefits of choosing fairly traded coffee. Residents rallied and sent over 500 requests to the two local grocery store chains — Copp’s and Woodman’s — requesting that they support Third World farmers by offering customers fairly traded coffee. Both supermarkets are noted for their desire to serve Madisonians, and have fared extremely well in an industry now dominated by corporate-owned chains.“

„Through fair trade, the chain of intermediaries is broken and the payment is more direct: small farmer / farmers' cooperative / coffee company / store / consumer. The guaranteed payment ($1.26/lb) is established to not only cover the cost of production, but to create a profit. Included in the purchase price is a premium that the co-op must use to directly benefit the community.“
