Tea & Coffee 06/01 - What’s Brewing In Specialty Retail?

„Allegro’s commitment to sustainability goes so far that they go a step further than most, taking sustainable practices at face value. They really try to be aware of the whole sustainability picture - a complex subject - rather than making money off of consumers’ reactions to simplified buzz words such as “shade-grown,” “bird-friendly,” or “fair trade.” For instance, Knox explains that not all shade-grown coffee is beneficial to the environment. Shade trees, he says, are not native to many coffee-growing areas - and some farmers that only grow coffee with little shade in one part of the farm, leave large portions of the rest of the land as untouched forest. Often, these farms actually have more birds than there are on more densely-shaded farms.“http://www.teaandcoffee.net/0601/retail.htm - Cached

„The coffee is all 100% fair trade (no fair trade logo because the logo only means at least 2% fair traded). This premium product is available single bean, shade grown, etc, and it all comes from coffee farms around the world that have a fair trade agreement with the company, called CoffeeFair. I have only tried their 5/4 blend, but that alone is enough for me to be a customer for life. There is no fee, only the coffee itself and shipping, plus you get the opportunity to sell the coffee online and spread the word like I'm doing (membership is available either free or upgraded).“http://www.coffeeforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=586 - Cached

Cafe Campesino ...from crop to cup a Fair Trade

„Although the two terms are not synonymous, most Fair Trade Certified (and all of Café Campesino's) coffee is also shade-grown. This is because all Fair Trade coffee is grown by small family farmers, most of whom own traditional, shaded farms that host a high diversity of birds. In addition to providing a rich habitat for birds, these shade trees often bear fruit, providing additional food or income for the farmers and their families.“http://www.cafecampesino.com/coffee/faq.html - Cached

„Opponents point out that many coffee shops already offer organic, fair-trade and shade-grown coffee. They argue that the ordinance would deny consumers freedom of choice, increase the cost of coffee and punish those farmers and workers who cannot afford to become officially certified.“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ 400.html - Cached
